World of Subways vol. 1 - A way to make it more stable?

During the last Steam sale I bought the first volume of the World of Subways series. I am aware this is a very old game and it was not further developed like Railworks which was released almost at the same time. I played it for a bit, but on my very first run I got a crash half way through. I got frustrated and quickly redeemed it, and bought the third volume instead, the one set in London. Runs much better and it's actually quite enjoyable to play, but right after I remeeded the first volume I thought about if it's actually possible to make it run a bit better, as in the Steam discussion section I've seen people who claim the game runs very good for them. Does anyone here still play this game? Maybe running in compatibility mode could improve things? I'm using Windows 7.
