Files Without Permission

Anyway, I have a few repaints of engines and the readme doesn't say if you can distribute them with your route. It also doesn't say who did it..all it says is:

With any repaints and files that don't say if you can give it out with your route..what should you do if you have it?

Personally, I dig around a little seeing if I can somehow ID the maker (find another similar older or newer readme that included a sig; people's habits change... often you'll find an earlier one that they did sign). There are at least 4 repainting artists that I now recognize their oh-so-brief readmes that just don't care what you do with their work. That looks like one of those to me. It's on a repaint, right?

Seldom do I find a model maker without a thorough readme and requirement to request permission to redistribute. Great Northerner is one exception that usually doesn't mind (check his readmes). I would never distribute a 3rd party created model without permission, but on repaints with readmes like that one there, I do. Include the readme with it. Some people WANT their work shared around liberally. I'm like that.

Hi! This kind of question puzzles me, particularly when assets are distributed as FreeWare. If an author distributes as FreeWare, then isn't it taken for granted that it can be freely distributed by others, as long as no charge is made for it. I can't see someone distributing a FreeWare asset and then limiting the free distribution of same, other than they would like to get the credit.

You can't believe how common this is today, especial with software source code, pictures, fonts and clip art. Personally I like to see a readme which clearly states how the repaint, model, script, whatever can be used. It removes doubt, especially if you want to include it in your own work, and in turn redistribute that. When I ever get around to finishing my route, I plan to release it, and the readme will be like the credits of a movie (after the install notes, so don't worry).
