Well, we'll find out what it is shortly, won't we. I sure hope it won't be another Uplay type platform.

What closed gaming platforms do you actually like and find useful, unobtrusive and not too greedy?

For the sake of multi-player and mixed platforms, I.e. PC's and consoles, synchronisity and DRM, awful as this is, a uniform gaming platform is a must.

However, in Farming Simulator MP, scripted mods aren't allowed on the consoles, neither are repaints, because the platform server compares hashes and scripts can do bad things. On the PC you can have scripted mods and repaints in MP with other PC players , but only default DLC when in MP with console players.

GOG is great. But note that it ISN'T a closed platform. Yes, it's a storefront. But the whole point is that you don't have to use their on-line client and the games DON'T have DRM.

Guess it's easy to see, I don't like any of them. I don't have good internet so I'm stuck at either an updating or connecting screen for a long time, gets super annoying. Plus games with always online drm, kick me out of the game as it requires a connection and my rural Canadian internet loves to drop the connection a lot.

I use steam because it's slightly less obtrusive in game, and it has the games on it I want to buy. I've stopped buying EA or Ubisoft games because they require their always online platforms to use the game. My fear is If they decide to abandon steam for their own platform, they won't have the same reach as the current TS does on steam. I think they owe a lot of sales to the fact that the game is on steam and not on some lesser known software.

And maybe this is just going to be another interface for steam (like this page-this might look like a proper store for DTG but it just a link to steam) and might just turn out to be Engine Driver 3.0, with a few more features and another new name. (But why isn't this news on train-simulator.com?) AKA probably something that we are overdramatizing because we won't use it much anyway. Also, there is this older post on the DTG site specifically about sticking with Steam. That was not too long ago, and Jackson is still the big boss, so I doubt the philosophy has changed.

Actually the venture capitalists fronting the money are the big bosses, it depends how much they want to micromanage things. Things could change.

I'm not sure DTG understands anything about their community. This initiative is probably too late and to little. From experience I have zero confidence DTG will do anything to help the community. Not with documentation, not with (technical) help not by resolving issues fast. So why would anybody use this new platform? Sorry I am a bit cynical about this.
