Early Retirement !?

Unread postby doublespan398 » Fri Apr 01, 2016 9:43 pm

Retired content/assets:

The subject of retired routes, rolling stock, locos, is for comparative newbies like myself, a somewhat perplexing, and annoying, facet of present day Railworks.
I was soon found doing the 'n o b r a I n e r r o u t i n e' when browsing through many of the workshop add-ons that held some appeal.
The matter of the 'big Railroad Company' with the 'small RW problems' has been pretty well covered on this forum, and the ensuing suspension of the S.P. route.
But it don't stop there, not sure if its just my imagination, but have the routes that display a significant amount of route creation skill, as well as their respective route
dependencies been targeted by some TS buzzards on the top branches of the metaphorical TS tree(!?)(!?)(!?).
If not, then can anyone tell me is there some subjective comment available, as to the reasons behind route/asset deletions, other than the route already referred to.

This state of WS add-on unavailability also brings me to ponder as to why those particular add-ons are 'still listed' on the workshop. Especially if '1' or more of the
dependencies have been retired, deleted, scrapped, (& I'm guessing ) since mid 2015 - back. Perhaps Dovetail/Kayako have some thoughts about re-installing at some
future point in time(!?) don't think I'll be doing deep breath time outs on that one either!.
So here's a short list of Workshop route dependencies/content that I've discovered thus far, and that appear to have fallen under the RW axe:

STEVENS PASS/PORTLAND TERMINUS/PHORUM PENNISULA/BNSFGP38-2/BNSF WAGONPACK(!?)/MJA HOPPER PACK.

If there's anyone out there that holds similar opinions as to what I've highlighted in this post, and can help with giving me access, or links, to any of the
dependencies/content that I've listed above I would be eternally grateful (well almost). As the size of the Stevens Pass route is beyond conventional DL means, this would
necessitate that route needing to be installed on the 'cloud'. Not sure about the sizes of the other two routes mentioned. I've contacted Jointedrail.com re the possibility
of acquiring the GP38-2 via any link that they may still happen to have. But sucked the thin edge of the straw on that one too.

Why are you so out of shape about this? Do you think there is some obligation for everything to be available forever? Try running Quick Books 2010 or XP or whatever. As far as the GP38 it is available from several sources.

Holy cow how convoluted can a simple question become?
Here's a short answer to your long question:

STEVENS PASS: not available outside of US because of BNSF licensing issues
PORTLAND TERMINAL: notavailable because of PanAm licensing issues
BNSF GP38-2: not available outside of US because of BNSF licensing issues
BNSF WAGONPACK: not available outside of US because of BNSF licensing issues
PHORUM PENINSULA: According to Derek from DTG, "it was put together by many different people and it became very complicated (ed.: the ownership of it). However the good news on that is that Kev passed the rights to the narrow guage to another 3rd party. From that something else more special is coming, but more news on that over the coming months."

Here's a thought about "retired" DLC routes: some of the routes available through Steam Workshop are re-workings of "official" routes. Could a slightly re-worked "disappeared" route (a bit of foliage here, a new spur or loop there, etc.) be uploaded successfully, thus becoming available again? On a more ambitious level, how about removing the (ridiculously) disputed logos -- or, as I have suggested more than once already, replacing them with non-threatening alternatives (Pan-Am could become "Fat-man" BNSF "NOGO", etc.)?

In case of legal persecution, I'll claim temporary sanity. *!rolleyes!*

A few thoughts, Buzz: numerous very old DLC routes are still available, despite never having been "brought up to snuff"; removing an older route from circulation means erasing all of its user-created dependencies and scenarios, "official" or not, from circulation: here at RWA, as far as I know, old thread topics -- even locked ones -- are never removed because that would mean deleting all of the posts contained in them. This could easily be viewed as a free speech issue -- heck, if money is speech, why not scenarios? Certainly, entire programs or at least versions of them vanish regularly from the marketplace, but TS is not really similar to Quick Books or Windows and it seems to me that a scenario, asset, or modification created by a TS user is, in fact, "intellectual property" and should not be destroyed or rendered useless by DTG.

Any lawyer reading this post should now be seeing visions of class action.

"Humbly" submitted, !!howdy!! .

Its a real world problem: http://www.businessinsider.com/npm-left ... ned-2016-3

Several years ago we called this DLL Hell, and so far no one has come up with a suitable solution.

As it seems I have caused some discontent with certain parties on this Forum. I would like to say that I was only attempting to present the facts as I found them.
And as such seek some advice, and or, assistance, re those anomalies that I have inquired about.
If my comments appeared to be naïve, or without adhering to correct protocol, then I must apologize to those concerned.
Perhaps after 3 years, rather than 3 months of experience with 'Railworks' I'll be more in touch with the games capabilities, or lack of.
In future I will address any further posts on this Forum, in a more abbreviated, moderated, and hopefully acceptable manner.

Withdrawn routes are still owned (and of course remain playable) by many people, so there is no reason why Workshop items that use them as dependencies, shouldn't be there.

There is still plenty for you to enjoy without those items
