Because I have never purchased anything there I ask the question, does Steam then know you have this and would replace it if it got corrupted or do you have to go back there or are items from there stand alone or what?

You get given a code which you activate through Steam - and your download comes directly from Steam themselves. I've used it a few times, no problems or issues. Once appled to your account the software works just as if you had bought it from Steam directly. Hope this helps.
