I used to agree with this:
I've been saying for a while now, and I'll keep saying that I'm not convinced that RSC is out to "get" the hard-core enthusiasts
.
But take a look at Flight simulators from Microsoft. In FSX they did have the serious simmers market and FSX was authentic enough to use to initially train real world pilots (and now reincarnated as P3D by Lockheed Martin). But what happened - MS introduced MS Flight a newer but more mass appealing Flight simulator and within 3 months they canned it, possibly due to poor sales.
So I don't think catering for either hard-core enthusiasts at one end of the scale or arcade junkies at the other is necessarily a good move. You have to cater for the simmers in the middle - people like me who feel that the realism is good enough (It could always get better) and we like the way the sim is being developed. I don't think that RSC would be continuing in this business if they had not discovered this niche market, which seems to be quite successful. Sure we would all switch in the blink of an eye lid if another "better" rail sim appeared. That's business.
I admired what Rich Garber said, it was good plain speaking, but I did not agree with his sentiments. As is my wont.
I like the way RSC are developing the sim and I'm looking forward to the 20th.
