Railworks America

Here's an overview of some of the modifications I've been making to my personal clone of the RW&A route. My RW&A route, I call it the RWAC, is set in the late 1950s and consists of four intersecting railroads:

The RW&A is a first class railroad operating in Northern Michigan. Its Superior Subdivision runs south through Riverside on a double track main.

Our Lakeside Sub is a branch line connecting the main at Riverside to the ore docks at Waterton. The RW&A is a modern, thriving railroad, and by the late 1950's has completed its transition to diesel locomotives.

At Waterton, we meet the Wisconsin & Upper Peninsula who have become a major source of freight and passenger interchange traffic. Still running steam locomotives, the W&UP main is a great place to watch the old Berkshire's and Northerns at work.

The Lake Superior and Western, runs south, through Gogebic, Junction, Atlantic, and on south. It has operating rights over a section of the RW&A, mainly for access to the trestle over the Iron Creek. The LS&W is an electric traction line, just beginning to make the transition to diesel locomotives.

Campbell Forest Products (CAMFOR) operates a small 3 mile shortline from Junction to its mill at the old North Adkins site. Currently they operate a GE 44 ton locomotive for the daily turn to Junction.

There is a small yard at Junction used for interchange between the three railroads - RW&A, LS&W, and CAMFOR.

So that should set the scene for further posts - stay tuned!

I have a question:

Do you know what the CAMFOR paint will be? I wouldn't mind seeing it on the SW10 and the CN SW1500's.

I have some ideas but I am open to suggestions. I like yellow, and think 1950s!

It looks super simplistic... I like it! I like to run log trains (When i can of course) with Smaller SW power, Namely the SW10s from Sherman hill and the CN SW1500s from the SW pack for the Spark arresters. Ima have to talk to noel to see if he can paint a mock up (the 2D scales of course)

This is all quite fantastic. A very nicely envisioned prototypical operation. I like the paint as well. Looking forward to seeing its development and operating on it.

Those would fit in well. Or if someone wanted, they could run a geared loco or small steam switcher on the CAMFOR branch.

Introducing the CAMFOR branch is something anyone could do even with their existing RW&A route with a simple scenario, or even free roam. Treat the west leg of the wye as the interchange track, add some cars to pickup and drop off and you would have an enjoyable run.

Wow 2016 will be a joy on the RWAC route. The GE 44t, Camfor, is a very nice graphic creation - simple and minimalist (we see the influence of the Chicago architecture mouvement of the 50's - love it) :-) For a short line, strapped for cash, a weathered or a heavilly soiled would be in its natural element - as yellow is difficult to keep sparkling clean!

Someone here requested a CAMFOR SW1500. So I went ahead and quickly whipped one up.

I like the SW1500. My paint scheme is evolving. I wanted the stripes to look like the side of an evergreen tree. Here's my current artwork.



And I've added some spark arresters and a bit of backwoods clutter to the GE 44 Tonner -

That's just awesome. Great job.

The last few days had me working on an interesting project. As part of the CAMFOR development, I decided I wanted to move North Adkins. Previously it was only a few hundred meters as the crow flies to Adkins. I moved it 2 km further north. This gives better visual separation; and with less crowding I have more frame rate headroom to add details. But doing this move was an interesting programming project. I wrote a software tool that allows me to pick up and move any tile on a route. Everything - terrain, mixmap, scenery, roads, lofts, etc gets relocated. The only exception is track, which I have to move manually. Once all the scenery was gone, it was easy to circle-select the track and use cut and paste to move it to the new location. Then it only took a couple of hours to lay a new line to connect it to the mainline at Junction and adjust the terrain along the way. I've still got some detailing to do including a couple of wooden trestles, but its turning into a nice scenic run.

Now that looks like Lumber Country!!
