How do I make in-cab sounds louder?

The engine sounds in the cab of the various DTG F-units are muffled to a ridiculous degree, to the point where I can barely hear them sometimes. This problem doesn't seem to exist on any other locomotive, and I remember it was fine back in the old Railworks days. Is there a mod anywhere that makes them louder, and if not how can I do it myself?
