GE P42DC Sound Enhancement Demonstration! [WIP]

Unread postby tplowman91 » Wed Mar 25, 2015 9:48 pm

I present to you, but still, a work in progress, some work I've done with the P42 sounds.

These sounds are still a Work in Progress, so I'd love to hear your feedback of things you'd like to hear, and things you found odd..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xl_mBfS ... e=youtu.be <<<<<<<<<<CLICK THERE

This sound enhancement includes..
1) New internal/external FDL16 chug sounds from the Genesis series.
2) Internal/External Turbo Whine with run up
3) Internal/External New modified Head End Power (HEP) Sounds
4) Internal/External Compressor Sounds
5) Internal/External Fast Compressor (?) (A quick compressor sound the P42's make and shut off quickly... example: TCSHH(AIR)WHAAAAPPP......TSCHHH!!!; not really sure why they do this.)
6) Internal/External FDL16 Prime Mover Sounds (WIP)
7) Half/Full Dynamic Horn System, horn changes pitch and reverb from the cab with nearby track objects, speed, and how much the window is open. (Example: Running at 50MPH, window half open, near buildings, the horn will reverberate, echo, and change pitch. With the window completely closed, it will be muffled, as it would be, and the window ALL the way open, the horn will be quite loud!!!!)
8) Dynamic Brake Sounds (new); these don't come on and shut off, they increase with pitch as the operator applies more dynamic brake power.

These sounds have also been worked to sound differently outside then they would inside. Most are real recordings from in-cab, while outside they were recorded from outside.

I would love to know what you guys think of the progress. Let me know what you what sounds you'd like added, modified, worked, or changed. I have a huge pile of P42 sounds, that can be used for this project, further.

Some things I plan on adding..
1) External brake hiss
2) Brake squeal
3) Some more external spitter valve sounds
4) Better startup and shutdown sounds
5) Alerter sounds
6) Cab AC/Heat
7) Radio sounds

I like aural feedback when I operate the controls.

Throttle, reverser should clunk into their notches and against their end stops,
Buttons should click,
Switches should clack,
Different hisses when automatic train brake valve or independent brake valve are applied or released.

Sounds that give you the impression you are actually "in charge"./

There is a 100 MB MSTS sound set for the P42's over at Railsim.com. I'll get me that file and drop it into my Open Rails install to hear.

Yes, I'm currently working on that, switches and much work, except the clicking sound of the throttle. What do you think, thus far, of the sounds?

I cannot judge the fidelity of your sound set, as I have never been near or in a P42DC. So far so good, my ears tell me. Using a headphone, there is some nice bass.
I presume these modern Diesels are relatively quiet in the cab. There must be crew protection guidelines or even legal requirements as to what sound level and spectrum engine crews can be submitted. Hours of prolonged exposure to whining and droning does lead to hearing damage.

Setting up an audio chain is some of the darkest voodoo in Railworks, lots of trial and error.

These sounds rock! When I get to buying the P42 Empire Builder and/or Miami route I will make a patch that applies the Metro-North P32 sounds to the Amtrak P42s in those parks, if you won't release those. I am a little disappointed that you pulled the other cab rides off YouTube. Some others were made unlisted so I'll post links to them here:

UPDATE!

June 16th, 2015

Update includes:

Working/Audible Alerter System
Dynamic Bell (reverb + echo effect) near and next to buildings and with speed

Awesome, will this support Fan Railer's physics but require the Metro North P32?
