Feisty turntable

Unread postby OldProf » Tue May 27, 2014 9:34 am

Ran the scenario that requires use of the turntable at Waterton yesterday ("Mine all mine, Pt. 2, I think). At the end, the engineer is required to pull two engines onto the turntable, drop one on a storage track, and drive the other into the roundhouse. I've done a lot of turntable driving in this sim and am prepared to say that this is the feistiest one I've met so far. On the first attempt, after centering the two engines on the bridge (not an easy feat in itself), I pressed the G key and watched the bridge lurch counterclockwise and then clockwise as the engines boogied until the dropped -- literally -- toward the pit floor. After reloading the scenario from the last save point, I tried again. The same double lurch occurred, but this time I got lucky and the engines only played a bit of hopscotch while remaining on the bridge. This maneuver is a great end to a scenario, and was carefully planned to use the approach track aligned with the turntable bridge's default position, with the intermediate drop-off allowing roundhouse entry on an offset track, but perhaps two engines constitute too heavy a load? I'd like to know whether this scenario beta testers had difficulties similar to my experience.

Thanks for some very good scenarios, fellows!

Yes the turntable is an issue. I did find that it behaved for the most part if you just tapped the key quickly particularly on the first move. The darn thing is hard coded so there is not much that can be done to make it less abrupt when it starts so the farther out from the center the more violent the "whiplash effect". I have asked several people about fixing this however no one seems to have figured anything out yet. Research continues on this issue.

Like I said a very quick tap or very fast mouse click seems to help some. Thanks for your comment.

I had the same problem trying to get at the coach in the roundhouse. In the end, out of frustration I ran the loco with the tracks about 12 inches out of alignment and, surprise, surprise, it worked. No derailment!!!! !*don-know!*

It reminded me of a good old British film "The Titfield Thunderbolt"!!!

I always click the turntable, never had a derailment on my part, also it seems like the turnable moves the opposite way when you press 'G' then when you click it.
