Regardless of where the bell is, what rings it? Should there be an air switch in the cab or would they use a pull-cord?

I take it the bell was not original equipment, but rather it was something that a few railroads added after taking delivery. If that's the case, the bell could be operated by whatever method the railroad considered appropriate or expeditious or both.

Thanks for the info, Anthony, The only photo I have found that shows anything resembling a bell switch is this one...

Next to the window. We assumed this was a sander switch since ALCo steam locomotives had a similar switch in a similar location. But if that's the bell switch, where is the sander switch? I see there's also a globe valve next to the switch. You think?

What he said about the bell: Standard equipment, bronze bell, under frame or on hood, air operated.
