Actually there are two train order signals mounted back to back. One for traffic in each direction.

Helping to hand out train orders?! Hold on, just how old ARE you guys?!?!?! !*roll-laugh*!

Just kidding! Seriously, I enjoyed your story Harry. Wish there were more posts like that around the forum.

Sometimes I wish I'd been around to witness some of the stuff ya'll got to do. I was in a working station with an operator a couple of times, but the Greenbrier sub was nearly dead by then so I never saw how anything worked. I liked to play office as a small child, so even then I knew I was missing out on something cool. All the "parts" were there in place, showing all the wear of years of use, but nothing ever rang, buzzed or moved. I remember the smell of that old wooden office very well and I remember the atmosphere felt "absent". Even the operator seemed like he was already a half ghost.

It was in 57-59 I believe.

Something new for the route, we figured a shortline like the R&WA probably wouldn't have owned air conditioned coaches, so here's one without A/C:
