Back story (please be brief): BAY of QUINTE RAILROAD - FINAL – 4.April 2010

The Bay of Quinte Railway is located in south eastern Ontario, Canada. You’ve probably never heard of it before, but it was an 80 mile shortline which ran from the town of Deseronto northeast to Yarker, then northwest to Bannockburn. It’s original intention was to reach the Ottawa Valley and it’s rich timber resources, however the closest it got was the extension from Yarker to Sydenham. In the early 1900s, it was purchased by the Canadian Northern who used it as part of it’s Toronto to Ottawa line, and was eventually absorbed by CN and abandoned in the mid 1900s. In my version however, I’ve imagined that the railway was never purchased by the CNoR, and instead built the extension to Ottawa, and survived until the present day, being used by CN and VIA as the fastest route from Toronto to Ottawa. Of course, this meant I had to bend history somewhat, but I have tried to keep things as close to the prototype as possible.

History:

As I said above, I basically imagined that the BQR managed to survive until the present day. In order to do this though, I have changed several things.

1) At the northern end of the route, there were many iron mines and lumber camps. However, in the mid 1900s, these all closed down as the resources had been depleted, which is the reason why the line was abandoned. Instead though, I’ve imagined that the iron deposits were much larger and valuable, and the mines are still using rail service today. Although the lumber industry will still be gone, I plan on having a pulpwood industry on the northern end of the line.

2) One of the reasons the line to Ottawa was abandoned was because the freight connection to Toronto did not generate much traffic, as Ottawa was not a major industrial centre. However, in my route I’ve changed this so that Ottawa includes many industries, as well as an intermodal transfer yard and an Auto plant. This will help give a reason for the need for a faster connection from Toronto to Ottawa. As for passenger service, VIA is presently servicing Ottawa. Currently, it uses the CP line from Brockville to Ottawa, however, since my route would provide a faster and more direct connection, it will be used by VIA trains instead.

3) The Bay of Quinte Railway connects with the CN Toronto-Montreal corridor at the town of Napanee. Here, CN freight will be transferred to the BQR rails. Since maximum efficiency and minimal delays are crucial to making the route plausible, I plan on having CN trains run over the BQR to Ottawa. However, another idea would be to have the consists of the CN trains left at Napanee and immediately picked up by BQR crews. This would allow me to possibly have the ES44DCs painted up in BQR colours and would give more interesting operations, but would be less plausible

Hopefully these changes will make the route even remotely plausible in terms of operation and the necessity for it. However, I’m not that good with creating plausible histories so any input would be appreciated, especially on the CN running rights thing.

About the Route:

Deseronto Spur- This is roughly 8 miles long and will be the first part of the route that I will finish. It will be modeled as a dilapidated branchline serving several industries in the town of Deseronto. This is where I used to live until we moved to Sudbury 5 years ago when I was 10 years old. I have tried to make it as accurate as possible, as it brings back a lot of good memories. Some of the industries here will include a frozen food cannery, a steel fabricaton plant, an agricultural co-op, team track, and a lumber yard.

Smiths Falls Sub- This is the line from Napanee to Ottawa. It runs through farmland near Napanee and Ottawa, and traverses an extension of the Canadian Shield called the Frontenac Gap, providing for some interesting scenery. It will have scattered industries along it, including a paper mill and tire plant, and interchanges with CN at Napanee, CP at Smiths Falls, and the Ottawa Central at Ottawa. This line will be used for everything from intermodal trains to fast VIA trains to local runs.

Note: This part of the route was not completed and it does not go all the way to Smith Falls or Ottawa.

Required are these Assets add-ons from the following, but
the route should still run if not all of them are present:
