Back story (please be brief): The line connecting Barstow to San Bernardino is one of the most vital and busiest rail lines in the country. Passing through the San Gabriel Mountains via the world famous Cajon Pass, the route features gradients of up 3% in some areas making it a challenge for even the most seasoned engineers. The first rail lines over the pass were laid by the California Southern Railroad (a subsidiary of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad) in the 1880s with the Southern Pacific Railroad eventually opening it's own line in 1967. Union Pacific originally operated over the pass via trackage rights until it's takeover of Southern Pacific in 1996 through which it also acquired Southern Pacific's line over the pass. Today, Union Pacific and BNSF (Santa Fe's successor railroad) continue to haul millions of tons of freight over the pass every day with no sign that the traffic will slow down any time soon. The high frequency of trains on this line has also led to it becoming a magnet for railfans all across the nation.
