I just made a minor change to the Guidelines in regards to attaching or linking to images in a post.
You can see it at this link: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=262

Hiya, when you post an image greater than 640 wide, is it changed to a thumbnail automatically?

Yes! I just installed a new mod that does that automatically. When you now click on an image (attached or linked to) you should see the full size image in a lightbox sort of fashion, with a dark gray background.
Some images, if they are bigger than your desktop resolution, will have the small plus sign icon in the top-left. That means the full size image is even bigger. Here's an example of what I'm talking about.

This new feature applies to attached images and images that are linked to using the [img] tag. Images linked to using the [url] tag are not displayed this way.

This also means that the pixel width limit has been lifted. No longer are images required to be 1030 pixels wide or less, however, attached images still need to be less than 256 KB, which means png images can not be attached to a post. They must first be converted to jpg.

Images in the png format can be linked to from an external site, but due to their huge file size they will load a lot slower than images in the jpg format, especially taking into account of the external site connection, which could - at times - be slow as well, adding to the time it takes for the image to load.

I just made a change to this mod. Now, instead of viewing images full size as described in my previous post (using the plus sign in the top-left corner of the expanded image - when available), you now use the expander symbol found in the lower-right corner of the image (or the f key on your keyboard), as seen in this screenshot.

If you don't see the expander symbol, that means your already viewing the image at it's fullest size.

I noticed some images weren't displaying properly when you clicked on the expanded image (the plus sign) to view the full size image, so I added the HighSlide script and now it seems to work OK.

Also note, as seen in the below shot, that if you hover your mouse in the expanded image you will see a mouse note that says to click on the image to close, or click and drag to move the image around.
I haven't found a situation yet where the arrow keys move to a next or previous image though.
