The Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society's (FWRHS) restoration of their EMD SD9, Nickel Plate Road #358, is nearing completion. This week, FWRHS unveiled 358 at the Progress Rail's plant in Muncie, Indiana, freshly-painted in her NKP livery.

Would any be interest in painting either the Shasta Route Southern Pacific SD9E or GreatNorthern's CB&Q SD9 (these models have gyralights) into the NKP livery?

it's a very clean but catchy paint scheme. Would look good in the sim.

It's been a while since we got any Nickel Plate Locos or Rolling Stock in Train Simulator Classic, so this would really make a good fit for the game.

It's been a while since I tried but I wasn't using it at the time.

How were you getting into dds?

I was opening texture files in RSBin Tools and then exporting them to a folder to save as DDS files. I remember now the issue was that it had to be a 32 bit uncompressed format and I couldn't figure out how to do that.

Do you want me to take a whack at this? I'm finally caught up with stuff more or less.

Buzz, if you can post a way to get .dds files out of paint.net for this loco back into RSBin Tools for conversion please let us know!

Paint.net does not save your work as a .dds it saves it as a bmp. Then you open it in DXTBmp add the alpha channel and save that as a .dds. Then import that to RSBinTool and save it there for the TgPcDx in the Texture folder. At least that's how I do it.

The latest version of Paint.NET (v5.0.8) includes support for DDS file types. Older versions had a plugin you could install called DdsFileTypePlus.

I just got the 5.08 after reading this and haven't had much time to play with it but I did a save as dds. When I opened it back up there was no alpha channel (or it was just white). Unless I'm doing something wrong that's going to cause problems doing re-paints when trying to get different effects.

Hey Buzz,

Are you still working on this repaint for/using the DRGW SD9? That's a nice locomotive and I'm actually surprised that there have not been more calls for repaints using it.
