110t Bathtub Coal Gondolas

Unread postby gtrtroger » Sun Aug 11, 2019 4:31 pm

We are in serious shortage of 110t Bathtub Coal Gondolas like the one pictured below for use mainly on the Powder River Basin route and others I am sure. Suitable candidates for repainting are:

DTG - Dovetail Games

DTG Chicago Racetrack - BNSF Coal Hopper (Silver/Brown)
DTG Norfolk & Southern - NS Coal Gondola (Silver)
DTG Sherman Hill - UP Coal Gondola (Silver/Yellow)

RSC - Railworks

RSC Cajon Pass - Coal Gondola
RSC Maria’s Pass - BNSF Coal Gondola (Silver/Brown)
RSC Stevens Pass - BNSF Coal Gondola (Silver/Brown)
RSC EMD SD40-2 BN v2 - BN Coal Gondola (Silver/Green)
RSC EMD SD40-2 BN - BN Coal Gondola (Silver/Grey)
RSC GE ES44DC BNSF - BNSF Coal Gondola (Silver/Brown)

These gondolas are usually all aluminum and are color-coded on the ends according to the car owner. A simple google search would identify any/all possible examples. We are not looking for specific models...all models are acceptable. Have fun with it. Buzz recently did a whole series using the SS 100t 3bay coal Hopper. We need the same, but more modern versions for the PRB Route. Thanks for your support.

I'll see what I can come up with. Might be a few days though.

The issue is with the model. First, it is an old model from 2011 that keeps getting recycled by DTG. Second, the paint mirrors on the other side causing the coloring on the end to be at opposite ends on each side.

Well, that probably explains why we don’t have a lot of them.....still.....would be nice....
Maybe the folks at JointedRail/Searchlight will come up with something...hint, hint....

The physics on many of the Kuju/RSC/DTG versions were quirky, and would often lead to the hoppers tilting on their coupler axis and then staying tilted.

I'm working on this issue but if any of our modelers want to step up that would be swell. We for sure need a new model.

I second the motion. In all seriousness, I tried repainting one last year into a "what if" paint scheme, and finally gave up out of frustration. As someone had mentioned, the sides are mirrored... which means you can't get the rotary end color patch on the same end. I also had to make some of the lettering backwards, and cut it up so that it fit around the ribs. I still may come back and try finishing it up, but what a PITA (and not the pocket version).

There is a Trainz version of the coal porter car. Not sure who it's from though. But maybe BNSFDude can inquire from Jointed Rail.

JointedRail seriously has the coolest rolling stock out there and looks great as well.
I wonder how hard it is for them to convert the cars to railworks?
I’d love to see a rapid flow hopper for the game, someone was starting to make one but the topic went quiet !*don-know!*

Their rolling stock is already being converted to railworks by the gentlemen over at Searchlight Simulations. I have no idea if they have plans or not to bring these over.
