UP FEF-3 Repaint

Unread postby stationmaster101 » Mon Dec 22, 2014 3:39 pm

After my last repaint request took off like a rocket, I thought I'd make another request, this time would be for Smokebox's FEF-3 locomotive. Really would like to see a weathered version of this locomotive since these locomotives went from passenger service into freight service as they're time came to an end, and it would be nice to recreate some of these later freight runs with the weathered engines. Anyway here is a good pictures i found if anyone is up for the task. Image

I wouldn't mind a weathered version.

Here is a link to a bunch of UP photos to see what a realistic weather job would be like: http://www.westernrailimages.com/Union- ... &k=3CpzLkk

Weathering on a steam loco is all in the knowledge of knowing that if it lets off steam, water overflow or soot from any port or hole, there will be a stain. Add heat to that and the mess from the sanders in foul weather and you have weathering. !*salute*!
I only looked into Mikes paint files just a little and right now seems like a big undertaking till I can get some more time.

Yeah i was thinking about attempting some edits myself (making a winterized version for myself) until i saw how complicated that would be (plus i have no experience repainting whats so ever) so i just kinda gave up on the idea !*don-know!*

Repainting the FEF-3 would be very complicated, not so much because of the inherent complexity of weathering a steam loco, as Joe mentioned, but also because of the enormous number of parts in the exterior model and the huge number of surfaces that are individually textured, plus the fact that some parts of the boiler textures are re-used on other parts of the model. You'd have to weather all of the exterior, because if you left anything unweathered, it would stand out like a sore thumb. You would also have to modify the alpha of the main texture files but being careful not to upset the balance between the alpha and the depth in the bump mapping. It would be a pretty big job.

Yeah, that's one of the reasons I don't repaint, some can and some can't. About repainting, I wouldn't even have a clue at how to start, or why I'd want to in the first place.

That's one of the reasons I 3D Develop instead of repainting.
