It is reassuring to see ongoing developer support which means continued life for the sim that has no equal or substitute.

Can anyone explain just what as users we are likely to see going forward. To be honest. I dont recall a hang or crash to desktop, even going back to the RW days. What will DX12 bring? I dont know what I am doing that others dont, or othets are doing that I am not, but touch wood <knock knock on my head>, I have always found it stable and trouble free.

Think I will wait a few days past the 27th, just to get some reports on how it all went before I dip my toe in the update pond, just in case. Time to back everything up... !!*ok*!!

Per the release: "The core update includes a streamlined codebase establishing a stable foundation on which we can build on meaning you will see less crashes due to problems caused by invalid code in the software. We’ve upgraded the core code to use newer plugins which perform better and enable us to take the code forward towards bigger things such as multi-threading." As I read this, a lot of old code is being either discarded or rewritten in the hopes of reducing crashes. This is an incremental update so in the future possibly DX12 and multi threading can be utilized. These small incremental updates are done so as not to break the game for a lot of people. As in some cases this may cause issues for some players. You may expect a smoother ride because of all this track repair.

I recommend all of you particularly those of you serious folks with a bunch of third party stuff loaded do a full backup before this update takes place. At least back up your Assets and Content folder so nothing gets lost. I backed up my whole Steam folder to a external hard drive just in case, "Expect the best and prepare for the worst." !*brav*!

Would I be fine copying and pasting all the folders in my Assets and Content folders into a separate folder outside of my TS directory or would the update potentially overwrite that stuff as well, even if its outside the TS directory?

Jack,
Anything that is outside the Steam folder should not be affected. I would just copy and paste the folder named "Assets" and "Content".

I wonder if the sale of DTG will affect the release of the core game update?

Update clarification from DTG JD 4/14/2023
"Just to confirm: the first core update will not include any visual improvements whatsoever and will not impact any content (routes, locos, scenarios, etc).

The update is entirely about improvements to the code to bring some much-needed stability to the software and enable us to build on and improve key areas down the line.

We'll be looking to implement improvements to stability for both 32-bit and 64-bit editions, a DX12 Experimental option (we'll need your feedback to help us decide how we move forward as we've seen varying reports relating to performance that we need a wider test group to give us more information on where it hurts/soothes the most), and some other bits and bobs designed to reduce crashes and provide better information to you and us on where we need to focus our efforts when things do go wrong. It is unlikely to provide any performance benefit at all at this stage as our work to-date has been about bringing order to the chaos."
It seems as if a provision to use DX12 is provided and DTG will be looking for feedback.

They seem to be going on with it. I would have expected everything would have been discussed before the sale.
