Sand Patch: Baltimore and Ohio, Chessie System, CSX.
Mountains, heavy tonnage, Multiple-era modeling possibility.
Baltimore and Ohio Cumberland Division: Westbound from Weaverton, Maryland through Harpers Ferry to Cumberland (100 miles long). Cumberland is division point with huge terminal/ steam locomotive servicing facilities. Three lines converged in Cumberland: The main line from Baltimore, The west-end line over 17 mile grade to Grafton, West Virgina and on to St. Louis, and the Pittsburgh Division Line to Pittsburgh and Chicago. This would ensure lots of through trains (solid coal trains, merchandise, passengers.) as well as switching opportunities. Main customers in Cumberland on the B&O: Cumberland Rolling Mill (Scrap Recycler), Kelly-Springfield tires, Queen City Brewing. Western Maryland's line to Connellsville was in town as well, adding possible WM locomotives and rolling stock.
-or-
West from Cumberland over 17 mile grade, Cranberry grade and Newberg grade to Grafton, West Virginia (West End of the Cumberland Division): This is coal country on the B&O.
Baltimore and Ohio Steam engines: EM-1 2-8-8-4, P-7 Class Pacifics, Bix Sixes, T3b mountains.
B&0 diesels. EMD E-units on passenger service, EMD FT's, F-7's and High Hood Geeps, EMD SW1 Switchers, Alco FA1's
Wagon-top Boxcars and Cabooses!
Chessie Era: Engines and Rolling Stock=endless possibility. Who doesn't like the Chessie Paint Scheme? and Chessie 614 excursions?
Losts of CSX modeling opportunities.
