the real pity is that rather than doing a decent American style 4-4-0 they made this monstrosity which we cannot even reskin into something decent

Of course they should put aside their plans and just do what you want.

I also think putting all the time into creating a "Monster Mesh",based on an American 4-4-0,would be better spent on a real typical 4-4-0, like the Leviathan, the B&O William Mason, etc, etc. Lets hope that there is a possibility that this Halloween loco, may have a prototypical one coming later. I guess they think the kids with some spare bucks will buy this one. I can not imagine it could be a money-maker.

I am very much looking forward to this new offering. The Xmas Xpress was already such a lovely thing -- I've shown it to a few kids and they all absolutely loved it -- now this one might be even better (if everything looks like on the screenshot: cartoon-style characters and models). I think it's great that DTG is thinking outside of the box every now and then.

Anybody remember the now apparently abandoned Rail Similarity Blog? This Halloween route screenshot reminds me a little of it.

Cheers
Michael

oh dear I seem to have stuck my foot in my mouth again. is that how my post came across? thats not how i meant it i merely meant that they could have started with an ordinary 4-4-0 THEN redone it to create this rather than creating this and limiting themselves to using the mesh in one highly seasonal dlc there by satisfying both those who would like a more normal locomotive and those who would prefer this one
EDIT having looked at my other post in this thread I can see how my post bears little resemblance to what I was trying to convey. I am sorry about any offense caused

I see what you mean.
Bear in mind that meshes are reusable. If 60% of this loco is an ordinary 4-4-0, then it can be reuse for a more conventional model.
I wouldn't be surprised if it was the reverse scenario: someone at DTG might be working on a 4-4-0, and they decided to make a Halloween special out of it just for fun. Given the amount of work needed for building a steam loco, that would be a likely scenario. Also look at what they did for the Christmas special: they reused the regular F7 and a few cars. There was also a steam loco but I don't remember which one.

Not one for me to buy. But then again, old hoggers like me take this game waayyy to seriously. !!jabber!!

Lets hope it is appreciated by the kids, sells well, and bring enough money to DTG to spend on improving the actual game. *!!wink!!*

I took the time to enlarge the screenshot of this loco, and it is a Rogers 4-4-0,very much like "The General". The cylinders may be slightly different, but the sand and steam domes, driver and pilot wheels, and boilers shape seem to be that engine. So I am feeling a bit better about it,now. I would absolutely pay for the General,or an 1860-1880's American.

I remember that one well. It gave me many a laugh at the end of the day during a couple of very stressful years at work. I wish more had come of it, myself.

I'll say this for DTG's more whimsical side: this is the sort of thing that starts enthusiasts young. Half a century ago, all we had were a collection of cartoons, mostly from the Depression Era, including one particularly brilliant effort by Disney called It's Outta Scale. Beyond that, it wasn't until the early '60s that Lionel began running their famous Give the Kids a Track of their own and They'll Stay off of Yours ads, but few houses had the room or the budget for one layout, much less two. A growing user base can only be good for all of us.

Don't mention that. It still hurts me that it was abandoned.
