Norfolk Southern (Monongahela) coal lines

Unread postby ElphabaWS » Fri May 16, 2014 7:10 am

Dovetail Games has announced its latest US route. See:

http://www.engine-driver.com/article/show/3574/norfolk-southern-mon-line-comes-to-train-simulator

For those not familiar with the NS MGA coal district lines, they host both heavy NS and CSX coal operations.

PS - And as stated in the article, this is NOT the "Where in the World" route, which is yet to be announced.

The screenshots are amazing! I honestly was fooled by the first one - at first I thought it was a real-life photo!! They've done a fantastic job on the road surfaces, kerbs, roadside clutter, etc.

There are tracks down our streets of my town here in California, but it's just short locals. It's cool seeing these full size main line trains going down those narrow streets. I'd say a good call by DTG. Hopefully cuz it's a short route, they will have it very detailed and fairy accurate. !!*ok*!!

I'm guessing there isn't much of a grade since it follows quite close to the river. Plus the videos I've seen have 2 locos hauling coal with no DPUs or helpers, which says it's a gentle route.

If they wanted to earn some brownie points with NS fans they would make a SD60E.

The portion of the MGA along the river (West Brownsville - Waynesburg) is relatively level. However, the Manor Branch (Waynesburg - Bailey Mine) has a 1% ruling eastbound grade and heavily loaded coal trains require a rear helper set, which is stationed at Bailey. The helpers typically push eastbound to the Manor summit, cuff off, and drop back down to Bailey Mine, but if no other traffic is expected will stay on all the way to Waynesburg and lay over there.

MDurdan is making an SD60E, so you don't have to wait on RSC
