That's clever!

Something I've always wanted to do in RW, but have never found the time to do, is to have an "active" guard figure who blows the whistle and/or waves a flag (and maybe for the US, shouts "all aboard") when it's time to depart.

No no, i mean the signal beeper that is in the UK stuff functioned the same as the whistle in the cab.. The Conductor would do a 2 hoot for "departure ready" for the engineer, and other stuff.

There was a solenoid or something, and I believe the little whistle in the cab was blown on air pressure.

I wonder if there are any videos (with sound, of course!) of that? It'd be a great feature to add to the 1940's version.

Over here the system was piped throughout the train using .75'' line, with air supplied via main reservoir. The conductor would pull a discharge valve and let air out of the line. The signal valve senses this and the whistle is plumbed to the signal valve. When the line is recharged the air rush into the line to refill the space trips the signal valve and is opened for the duration of recharging, giving a signal off the whistle.

Line on the firemans side is the steam heat line. Top line on the engineers side is the brake pipe. Underneath the brake pipe is the signal line:
