Trains don't bounce much unless they're going from a soft to a hard spot (crossings). If they're bouncing, somethings going wrong. Something I've learned about rocking and rolling, is that it happens around 13-16 MPH on stick rail. and it gets pretty bad, even with 3 Axle trucks.

Oh paaleeees we are rockin and Rollin At 12mph with 4 axle sw9 on the Ottawa division. Rocking back and forth, Boyce every now and then and the occasional sun kink effect.

Last I checked, you're too young to work on the railroad. But yeah, that pretty much is exactly what I said. Notice I said "even with 3 axle trucks". 3 axle trucks generally tend to ride better than 2 axle units like an SW or a GP unit. Sometimes we have to call the hog and let him know, especially if we are having a dinner train and wine is being served.

Judging by the cab ride videos we found and the many pictures we have, I think it's safe to say that the tracks on the Scenic Sub are really well maintained, use heavy rails and deep ballast beds. A big portion of the tracks is also quite new. So I think we should be aiming for a pretty smooth ride. However, even on sidings and many spurs BNSF seems to be spending a lot on maintenance. The only visibly rough tracks you can find along this line are some very rarely used sidings like for example the old yard at Skykomish or some of the industry spurs.

Michael, I agree that a DefaultRideQuality \ LineUnevenness values in the range of 15 to 20 would best represents Continuous Welded Rail. On the Montour I used a value of 45, as the Montour was still 39 foot jointed rail that saw minimum track maintenance, but a value that high would be completely unrealistic for the Scenic Sub / Stevens Pass. When you guys were laying track, did you use different track for the mainlines, sidings and industrial trackage? If so you could always set the DefaultRideQuality \ LineUnevenness to different values if different track rules were used, just to add variety. Keep up the great work guys, looking forward to this route.

On a side note, it would be great to see some more GN power to go along with this route. We need a few F45, a few SD45 like the Hustle Muscle and maybe a few U33C's.

Are your guys's track roughness settings different than what I got, because a value of even 70 barely makes any sort of motion in the cab at my end. From what I have found the values of the following on my pc work and look right from both inside and outside.

Mainline Welded Rail: 80
Mainline Jointed Rail: 100
Mainline Passing Sidings: 150 (jointed)
New Yard Tracks: 150
Older Yard Tracks: 180
Spur's and Other Sidings: 200-250 depending on how you want it to be.
Barely Maintained Track: 300

This is what I have found to match in game to what it actually feels like from my time riding on the rails in the cab of different locomotives. I encourage people to try this out on a section of track in a temporary route to see how it feels. If you don't like the motion of cab sway then please go back to the high speed passenger mainlines. Even the best freight mainlines has a good amount of cab sway that you can notice at any speed. (note that a value of 300 isn't something that will knock you off your seat, just shakes the cab a bit, I have even tried values of around 500 and it is still ok for very bad trackage.)

It was my understanding that Rail Works / Train Simulator only accepted 2 digits for LineUnevenness? I don't know if this has changed with the release of Train Simulator 2014?

Ever since I have used track roughness values since it came out we have been able to put values as high as thousands in there. And Anthony....ROFL I couldn't stop laughing when watching that video for some reason!

This may well be the greatest TS video ever. Let's acknowledge the music used (which I imagine just coordinated itself with the image and vice-versa, making it an ideal choice): "The Arkansas Traveler" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Arkans ... %28song%29 . Speaking of choices, the little people mover is also ideal for this whacky experiment with the track roughness setting. Lots of praise and many thanks!

No I am real, I'm not a objective !*roll-laugh*! Great video !!*ok*!! I just wish RSC would update their Wiki page indicating valid values for the variables used in Rail Works.

And exactly how does this relate to the thread in which it was posted? Let the voting for this month's irrelevance award begin!
