A former Southern SD45, hopefully these will be setup to run long hood forward?

N&W SD45's were in the 1700 and 1800 number series and both roads kept their unit numbers under NS until the units were retired.

RSC totally dropped the hat on the NS SD40-2's. They should have been setup to run long hood forward, but for some unknown reason RSC set them up to run short hood forward???

Why long hood forward, because that was the way a steam locomotives was setup, the cab was behind the boiler. The crews preferred to have that hood out in front of them at grade crossings. Most people don't realize the NS Dash 8's and SD60's were setup as long hood lead, even though they had a low short hood. During recent rebuilds, the control stands on NS SD60 are being moved to the other side of the cab and the low short hood is now designated at the front.[/quote

I can really see these running on the Connelsville district. LOL! *!greengrin!* *!greengrin!*

Great looking locomotive, and a nice addition to the NS fleet but I hope they add a touch more weathering to the body. Every picture I've seen of N&W/NS equipment shows a lot of wear and dirt.

Hi Rich

Was that part of mandated regulations or just to standardize the fleet.

Nice pick of the classy Southern unit.

I don't want to get too far off the original thread about SD45's. But to answer your question, my understanding this is to standardize the road fleet to short hood forward and this takes place during the mid life overhauls. On recent rebuilds a new safety cab is being added so the days of spartan cabs maybe a thing of the past. *!sad!*

One last note, just because the engine is running short hood lead, don't assume it's not a long hood lead with just a short hood.

Anyway getting back on topic, thank you for the update LordMannu, any chance we can get a couple of these SD45's in Southern Tuxedo paint and in Norfolk & Western's Hamburger scheme paint???

Rich S.

Is that a home made safety cab? Notice how the white faced numberboards extend over the windscreen, offering some much needed shade and making the units look mean.

Would ba a nice modeling variation for Eyein12's SD60 set.

Again, I don't want to hijack the SD45 thread as I'm interested in more info on the SD45, but I'll quickly answer your question. That is a NS designed cab and if I remember correctly the cab is being built by Brookville. The cabs are being applied to SD60's as they become due for their mid life overhaul. Part of the reason for the overhang is to allow access to the number board lights.

Now onto the SD45, has any cabview photo's been released yet?

Rich,
I agree with your thoughts on the N&W and Southern scheme like you had mentioned above. Microsoft Trainsimulator there was a ton of N&W rolling stock and locomotives but lacking in the Railworks community. Boy these would look awesome running on the Connelsville District, if that route ever existed in RW.
P.s. NS did a excellent job on one of the SD60 rebuilds dedicated to our Veterans.

I wonder what happened to this..
"If you really needed a diesel locomotive right away, then go ahead and order a ALCO. But if you could wait for real quality, then go for an EMD or a GE".

There is a GP38 Highnose here. http://s1.zetaboards.com/DigiRails_Foru ... 303/1/#new

But you also get a BNSF and a Southern GP38 as well.

You might need a account, I don't remember though.
