I just finished a week of filming Mullan Pass (even got a train just clawing up icy rails in near whiteout snowing conditions) and decided to take a couple impromptu side trips on the way back home of places I’ve also never been to before......UP’s Soldier Summit and their Cima Subdivision between Las Vegas and Yermo. Of course I will film them too.
I’ve been here a day and it was dead most of the time until late afternoon. I was able to catch one eastbound out of Spanish Fork to film it. I hope tomorrow fares better. I’m gonna wait all day until I can now follow a westbound train out of Helper.
The Helper yard looks pretty dead. There were two short lines of empty coal cars on their respective tracks and there was a single GEVO sitting all by itself in the middle of the yard. I don’t think it was even running. I didn’t see any indications that anything was being done there today since everything looked to be exactly in the same place tonight as they had been this morning.
I really like how these DTG expansions to routes work pretty seemlessly. The Gilroy expansion comes to mind. Having some more GP40-2 options is nice bonus too. Bring it on!

Yes... just type in "GSkid2000" and once on my page, click Videos and enjoy.![]()
I said I'd wait all day to get a westbound and of course I didn't get one until 6:30pm tonight. Luckily my camcorder's very large 1-inch sensor was made for low light conditions and it literally saved the day for me. I noticed that GEVO wasn't in Helper yard this morning and they had 3 EMDs sitting there instead. The rest of the yard was still the same.....dead.
I noticed that most of the freights here are almost all eastbound. A local waitress told me she doesn't notice a lot of westbound trains either other than Amtrak...thus kinda confirming my observations. I noticed an eastbound BNSF tonight. Not sure if they have trackage rights here or if it was done as some type of temporary detour.
After having gotten both an eastbound and westbound freight on film, I will likely leave tomorrow for the Cima Sub.![]()
You know since DTG has been extending a few existing routes, here's hoping they at some point extend the Feather River route to at least Portola....and preferably out to Reno Junction and a bit beyond it. It should have had it in the first place, but I'm willing to buy an extension if it completes the route.

The BN has TR over Soldier Summit, so that is why you saw one. Did you, by chance, visit Thistle? Thistle was the site of a HUGE landslide that caused the DRGW to rebuild it's mainline over a brand new alignment. I do believe the yard, tracks, and Infrastructure is still there underneath the 10' or so of mud, since the DRGW was unable to get to it due to how deep it was.
Are you aware there is already an extension of FRC up to Portola in the RWA library? The scenery is very good, a great Williams Loop and a good Portola yard as it looks nowadays.
However, the original release had some problems with the speed limits and signals. So I decided to fix them myself and work a little bit more the Portola yard and have my own FRCX (along with a friend), which I did not publish because I did not get to an agreement with this author.
RAILSOHIO wrote:Thanks for taking that screenshot. That does appear to be a 60 foot Auto Parts car, from what I can tell. The original promotional page for the route listed an 86 foot Auto parts Box,and I was curious to see what road name it was in. This car is what I mean.
