Why can't prices like these just be rounded off to $32 and $40?![]()
I been asking that for 50 years. Everything use to be .95, now it is .99. Buy a car for $29,999, sounds better than $30,000 ??
It's a practice that is based on well tested (over 100+ years) and proven consumer psychology. Ending a price in .99 is based on the theory that, because we read from left to right, it's the first digit of the price that resonates with us the most, That's why shoppers are more likely to buy a product for $4.99 than an identical one for $5. The item that starts with a 4 just seems like a better deal than the one that starts with a 5.
Great - - - over 100 years of testing and it's still annoying!
