I know of where You speak... I spent what seemed like 10 years there, ( Actually 3.5) when was stationed at the USAF's "Wyoming Missile Ranch" FE Warren AFB. The only Combat Base in SAC with no aircraft or runways. *!!wink!!* !*salute*!

The long grade on the east slope of Sherman Hill is no easy task for heavy freights ... I doubt Union Pacific built the low-grade Harriman Cutoff (Track 3) alternative just for the heck of it ....

A 4000 class Big Boy is rated at 3250 tons over the 1.55% grade of the original westbound main line and 5800 tons over the 0.82% grade of track 3. That's almost double the tonnage rating for a single locomotive; certainly nothing to sneeze at.
