it is possible, and I've done this simulation (sort of) of in Stevens Pass route. It just makes scenarios more interesting.
Slide fence has wire grid connected to signal lights on both sides of guarded track section. If slide occurs, signal triggered to red.
In the game, it can be done with some dummy AI traffic holding the signal ahead of player train (that's how it was implemented in mentioned Stevens Pass scenario)
