Okay, so now with my new motherboard, everything seems to be working great... Exect one thing. After I installed drivers that came with my motherboard into a freshly installed Windows, when I restarted my computer, the CD-ROM drive became unreadable by Windows. I checked in device manager, and it said that the CD-ROM had an error 10 (device will not start). I reinstalled Windows again, and the EXACT same thing happened. My computer can read the drive; my OS wont. Any of you guys know what this might be caused by? I'm thinking one of the drivers I installed is the culprit, but I'm unsure. The motherboard I just bought new was by ASUS, as well as the driver software that came with it.

What version of Windows? Is this a SATA drive, or the older IDE (wide ribbon cable) drive? If it's SATA, you may have to go into the new board's BIOS and set the SATA ports to "legacy IDE" mode.

And is Windows up to date yet? Curious, if the drive isn't working, how did it install Windows?

I'm using Windows Vista 64-Bit, the drive is SATA, and the drive IS working, it's just when I installed the drivers for my motherboard, then restarted my computer, Windows wouldn't think that my CD-ROM was working. The drive DOES work, but it's only usable on things such as running disks on startup.

Did you try going into the device's properties and telling it to look online for updated drivers? Or going to the manufacturers website and seeing if there are Vista drivers for it?
It sounds like a simple driver issue to me.

X2 on what Chris said about it being up to date yet. Make sure it's all caught up on service packs etc.

I have never had to install a driver for a CD or DVD drive (I don't know about Blu Ray, tho). Before Windows is fully installed, it uses default drivers for all drives, like hard drives and CD/ DVD drives. That is why you can install OK. Go ahead and get Win 7 up to date. Then see if the drive shows up in Device Manager, and double check the BIOS settings like I said before. Should be set for "Legacy IDE" on the SATA channels.

The board drivers are for Win 7, right? Hope you didn't get a Vista or XP board, sometimes the drivers will work, sometimes not. If you have Internet, you can always look for the latest board drivers from the board's maker.

One other thing I have done in the past. With the PC powered off, unplug the drive's SATA cable. Power up the PC, let Win 7 get to the Desktop and plug that cable back in. Windows should see the drive and say it's installing drivers. Then it will say device ready.

This happens with Win 7 too - I had 2 DVD SATA drives and windows could not see them empty. Sometimes if I inserted a disk they worked fine - other times not. I could see them in the BIOS but only intermittently in Windows. I then changed the rig but could never discover why Windows couldn't see the drives which worked perfectly in many situations.

I'm now running a SandyBridge cpu on a Z77 mobo and I cannot get the USB 3.0 back ports to work and even when I connect a powered USB 3.0 HUB to the front working USB 3.0 ports it doesn't work either. I've installed every driver known to man and one day I'll figure it out. But it just goes to show how quirky computers can be.

You might try uninstalling that device in device manager, and then restarting the PC and letting it reinstall drivers for that CD drive.

Well, I found out the problem this time. I reinstalled Windows a third time, (and don't ask me why, I'm not smart ), and when I was installing the drivers for the motherboard, I custom installed them and found one that was for a SATA thingy. So I didn't install that this time, and what do you know? The CD-ROM works fine!

That stuff can be a pain.
I have four or six SATA ports controlled by my Z77 chipset, and at least two more controlled by Asmedia chip/s and drivers.
Sometimes OEM chipset drivers are the only ones that will work, sometimes it's the generic ones from Intel or AMD.
