Reskinning and Elements 10

Wasn't sure if this was a General, a Problem or Rollingstock, so opted for where there is the most traffic *!greengrin!*

After about 5 months, I had a few hours today, so thought I would dip my toe into some re-painting, however, I am having issues with Photoshop Elements 10 and opening .dds files. I have downloaded and installed the NVidia dds plug in, but I keep getting a "can not open because it is a wrong file type" error !**conf**!

Has anybody successfully managed to use Photoshop Elements 10 with the Nvidia dds plug in to reskin? (Win 7 64 os)

A general google search says it works / it doesnt work / use GIMP ! Would really like to be able to contribute something when I can, so I am now pretty annoyed.

!*hp*!

*!!thnx!!*

!*cheers*!

Long, long, ago, when I started to repaint I too wanted to use Elements. It didn't work well. I ended up buying CS3 and life became much easier.

CS2 is available from Adobe for free. If you search my posts for CS2 you will find the link. This is a legitimate licensed version from Adobe, so don't worry.

That error sounds like your DDS file might not be the right format for the target. Suggest checking the format and number of mip maps on export (before you paint) so that you know what to import back.

Use the 32 bit plug in. It'll work.

Only with the 32bit CS.

I have elements 10, Windows 7 64 bit. The 64 bit plug in didn't work but the 32 bit did. Elements is a 32 bit program
Just sharing from my experience.

The problem is that Elements doesn't have all the controls that CS has, especially when it comes to editing the Alpha channel.

Thanks guys...

Will try the 32 bit DDS plug in - nothing to loose. Failing that, will try CS2, but now my window has closed, at least for a few weeks *!sad!*

*!!thnx!!*

Question for Papa on this ... I followed that link not too long ago, but with no valid serial # to input I was unable to install the program ... help? (legal help that is, I'm not looking for warez hacks or stolen serial #'s mind you *!!wink!!* )

on a whim I tried the serial # from my rather ancient copy of Photoshop 6.0 but alas, no luck.

If I could get CS2 running, I'd be much happier than having to license CC for $20 or $30/ month

The license number is right there on the page where the D/L is if I remember correctly.

Yes it was. Adobe changed the entry page and now you need to register with Adobe to access the downloads. The serials should be there as well.

I posted another link to the download on one of JP's threads, I'll see if I can find it after the kids are in bed.

Got it this time. Missed something last time I tried it and never saw the prompt to register @ adobe.com

thanks! working now.
(though the program itself keeps asking me to register too ... )
