Not Good... Looking for Some Help w/ PC Problem

Unread postby ET44C4 » Tue Sep 08, 2020 5:57 pm

Hey guys, looks like my PC is giving me some issues just like everything else in my life right now. Over the last few days it’s been running a little slow, taking an abnormal amount of time to load folders and internet pages. Yesterday I encountered a freeze while on Facebook. Today, my PC decided to crash three times in a row. First time was while I was running Farm Sim. I turned the monitor off and then back on to find a blank green screen. The other two crashes happened right after a restart of my PC both ending with a blue screen of death.

Here are my specs:

MB: Asus Maximus V Formula
OS: Windows 7
GPU: Radeon 470

So... need some advice on what to check and how to trouble shoot. I got a code 96 from the MB on the last crash. Not a big tech guy. I have the motor on my truck in pieces lol, so I don’t think it should be too hard to figure out with some guidance from the pros. Really hoping I dont need to replace anything major, I’m definitely spending quite a bit on my truck to get it running again.

Thanks to anyone who might be able to help me out!

Q-Code 96 on post
My system powered up and gave me a Q-Code error of 96 during post this morning. Manuel says 96 means "PCI Bus Assign Resources". I powered the machine down by holding the power button and then powered it back up. It then posted and booted normally. Tried powering off and on a couple more times with no problem.

1. if your using Sleep mode DISABLE THAT. It does naughty things.
2. Unplug machine and reseat your memory and cards - make sure they are firmly seated.
3. blow the dust out of your machine with air. DUST IS YOUR ENEMY
4. Open EVENT VIEWER check APPLICATIONS and SYSTEM - look for errors particularly DISC errors (if you find those there are other steps)
5. Soft boot your machine once a week. (Restart)
6. If everything is stable after a week - start patching your machine
7. Have a full system backup of your box - if you don't have one do this now.
8. Consider bios updates for your machine - Read the details!
9. Virus Scan - go to malwarebytes.org
10. If you have apps your not using and don't need - UNINSTALL - they are all loading at startup and trashing your performance.
11. Open task manager once in a while - what's running? Is it running high cpu or using memory? Ask yourself if you really need that app.
12. Go here C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Local\Temp - delete everything inside the temp folder (this will speed you up)

The event viewer should barf up messages if your having hardware issues.

Of course you could have other issues or your machine is being used by a Russian hacker crew to mine bitcoin or push malware to all of our machines (see #9)
If this works for you - send Bourbon - I can always use that.

Thank you sir! Will work on it in the morning to see what I can do. I tried at least firing it back up this evening, but nothing happened. Blank screen.

Sounds like the CPU throttling down due to excessive heat.
Use a free utility such as Core Temp. Idle temps should stay around 40C.

If significantly higher:
- blow dust off airways and chips
- check if all fans are working properly
- make sure air flows freely through the case
- lower overclocking and voltage
- take heat sink off CPU, clean up old thermal paste, apply new paste and reseat heat sink
Over the hill and gathering speed

Thank you Chacal for the response. Definitely looking into what you suggested.

So I got the PC fired up this afternoon thankfully. Before doing so I followed Minerman's instructions on removing and re-seating my memory cards. I also dusted out my box (good Lord it was dusty *!embar*! ).

Working on backing up a few import things first before I jump into anything.

I am currently looking at the Event Viewer. I'm seeing this warning show up quite a bit: The driver \Driver\WUDFRd failed to load for the device WpdBusEnumRoot\UMB\2&37c186b&0&STORAGE#VOLUME#_??_USBSTOR#DISK&VEN_MULTIPLE&PROD_CARD__READER&REV_1.00#058F63666438&0#. (Source: Kernel-PnP)

Another error I received a few times was this one: The following fatal alert was received: 70. (Source: Schannel)

No idea what it means... will research it after I finish getting some important stuff off the PC.

Going to keep following both of you guys' suggestions while I work on this. Again, many thanks!

I am only responding as I got lucky. Suffice to say I know a little about these things.

So now I will reveal myself in my usual work environment.

I had 18,000 some files in my temp folder *insert hysterical laughter* Like what the heck.

Got the malwarebytes scan running, will update if I see anything questionable come up. !!*ok*!!

Processor is idling around 43-47C currently. Will follow up with Chacal's advice.

No longer letting the PC fall asleep as well.

Definitely going to go through all my programs and get rid of what I don't need. I'm pretty confident I can clean up a lot of stuff on here.

I certainly appreciate the help guys. It's great to have some professional help here. I got the one and only Minerman thumbs up! !*YAAA*!

You really need to run the basic Windows diagnostics - they can "fix" quite a few issues.
Run the following windows diagnostics:
Exactly in order from a cmd (admin) prompt
sfc /scannow
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Repeat until all errors fixed and then run
sfc /scannow up to 3 times following the above until no errors found.
dxdiag
chkdsk /f
Check the windows update history to see if any update failed.

Other windows diagnostics include:
DXDiag,
Chkdsk /f/r
PLUS, SAFE BOOT.
Turn off Hyperthreading if available.
Check Device Manager and fix any yellow exclamation marks errors, plus ensure for all items Power Management is NOT set to turn off a device if idle.
