So I have a GTX 870 and I was wondering how it would compare to the GTX 1060 performance wise. Is the 870 better than the 1060?

The 1060 is 2 generations newer than the 870 and I would have to expect better performance even without seeing specifics on them.

Remember older CPUs may also bottle neck newer video cards.

I just ordered an ASUS GeForce GTX 1060 6GB ROG STRIX OC Edition after researching GPUs for the last two weeks. There are so many varieties. Options such as card size, number of fans and base clock speeds. Not 1060s are all the same.I am replacing my ASUS GTX 960 4 gb with this one. The next jump would be to a 1080 and way out of my budget.

I just got a MSI GTX1060 3GB to replace my GTX960. I think you will be pleased with it.

This one was on my list of candidates. I thought the 6GB would be better as well as the higher base clock speed. I used my Amazon rewards for part of this.

Me too. Why go with a crappy "60" business card again? You're better off saving for a gaming card "80" even if it is a 9 series. The 980 blows a 1060 away.

Check out gpuboss.com . You can compare any video cards.

From the other post.

Can't stress this enough along with the balance between cpu.

How about some of us don''t want to get sucked into the "ultimate I must have" vortex that might not deliver much to this particular game and spend a BUNCH of money.

Thank you all for your input. It appears that the 1060 is (obviously) newer thus meaning that it runners better than the 870.

I could be wrong, right, or whatever, but I have the 870 and I have no plans for getting another for awhile. Again, thank you all for the input. I have viewed ever perspective as useful information and will remember what everyone has told me. !!*ok*!!

LOL a GTX 980 is years old, not the ultimate must have. Just because a nVidia card has a "10" in front of it doesn't mean it's bigger and better than a 9, or an 8, or even a 7 whatever just as you point out in the case of this game.

I mean, we are talking about running video games here, not PowerPoint with a business card.

Video game. One. If you are into serious gaming go to a gaming page. This is about Railworks. I know from nothing about gaming however the GTX1060 runs TS2017 very smoothly and at this point there seems to be little reason to spend more money unless you are into "mine is bigger than yours".

To answer the OP's original question.
The 1060 will rip the 870m a new one...
The 870 was a mobile only chip.

I just pulled the trigger on an EVGA GTX 1070 FTW. Pricey when compared to the 1060, but I needed something that would hold its own longer. !!det!!

Quite so. however, the 980 is nearly $300 more than a 1060, you might as well get a 1070/1080 if money is no problem, if you have a moderate budget then a 1060 6GB is excellent value for money.

Cheerz. ex-railwayman.
