A few questions about Steam...

Unread postby GSkid » Fri Oct 21, 2016 7:27 pm

In Steam when you choose TS2017, there is a list of your purchased DLC and next to them are boxes that are checked. My understanding is that the ones you UN-check will be removed from your system and I assume that Steam will not try to update that DLC you don't currently have checked and installed.

My first question is.... if I un-check a bunch of the DLC (pretty much everything that's not USA content related), does the Steam cloud remember this globally for my account? Cuz when I do eventually get my new laptop and install Steam on it, I want it to download TS2017 and have it automatically only download the stuff I had checked and not the stuff I didn't. Otherwise I guess I'll have to uncheck them as soon as it tries to DL the stuff on the new laptop. Anybody know? !**conf**!

My second question I had asked someone, but they weren't sure.... They told me how to install Steam games on another drive other than the C: OS boot drive....
"You can install most games anywhere you want with Steam, you just have to go into the Steam window and click on "Games" and then navigate to "Add a non Steam game to my library" You do that whether or not it's a Steam game or sim.You just navigate to the game's .exe and add it to the library short cuts."

What they weren't sure of is..... will Steam automatically update games or DLC content if it's installed on a drive other than the c: drive? I want to have some Steam games on one drive and some on another. Kind of a mix. And I want Steam to be able to update them automatically no matter what mix of drives or partitions they are on.

Also..... is there any Steam games that REQUIRE them to be only installed on drive C:? I've known some programs in the past (although not many) that would only work on the boot drive. Usually some shareware/freeware utilities.

Thanks! !!howdy!!

Games will be installed wherever you install Steam. You get the option what drive to install Steam when you install it. I have Steam and TS on my E drive. Don't know anything about your first question and I don't think anyone here would. I suggest you ask on the Steam forums or search through the Steam FAQs.

Only the stuff you have checked will be loaded to the new computer. (At least on my computers).
Steam will load TS to any drive and update like it should. I have no clue about if stuff is on two different drives as TS is the only game I have.

I was hoping it would remember what I had checked and unchecked. So it should install that way on the new laptop. That's great... thanks! *!!thnx!!*

I guess you bought a GTX 1060 laptop for just TS2017 and TSW too? That's dedication to the sim! I own 114 games on Steam currently. Too many good deals to pass up. *!greengrin!*

Steam will update any game on any drive or partition when you install the game you have to tell steam where you are installing it and that goes into its database, and it will apply any update specific to that game, wherever it is installed.

Also..... is there any Steam games that REQUIRE them to be only installed on drive C:? I've known some programs in the past (although not many) that would only work on the boot drive. Usually some shareware/freeware utilities.

I doubt it these days. Steam would not give instructions on how to install on any drive if that was the case. In fact, its best to avoid the C:Program Files and the C:\Program files (X86) as they have extra "security" applied from the Windows OS, and that can cause issues.

My first question is.... if I un-check a bunch of the DLC (pretty much everything that's not USA content related), does the Steam cloud remember this globally for my account? As Buzz says - when you open your steam account on your new laptop - Steam knows what games you personally have installed, what modifications, etc you have applied via Steam, and should only install the DLC that you have ticked wrt TS2017.

You can also have your Steam installation on one drive and have some specific games an another drive. For example, you might want TS2017 on a SSD drive forperformance, but not all of your collection.

Steam will update any Steam games on any drive or partition, as long as it's in the Steam folder.
What I wasn't sure about is, if a game was installed outside the Steam folder would it still update. Then I remembered my TS2014 backup. It's on a separate drive from Steam in a folder named TrainSimulator2014Backup, and it doesn't update the game. Steam does know it's there, because it updates the ads on the loading screens, but it won't update the Train Simulator software.
It makes me wonder. If a person did want a game or sim to update outside the Steam folder, if you could give it a folder path like "Steam/Common/" and then the game folders.
They would know the answer over in Steam's Software and Hardware forums.

That's exactly what I was planning. Older games and ones that aren't as demanding of the hardware will be on the hard drive. I'll definitely have all my train sims on the SSD along with modern AAA titles like GTA 5.

I plan on getting Samsung's top tier, super fast 512GB 950 Pro M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (Read: 2500MB/s - Write: 1500MB/s 110K IOPS). That should blaze things along nicely. *!greengrin!*

A Google search for "moving a steam game to different drive" should get you the official Steam support procedure for this.
If you follow these instructions, Steam will know where your game is and will update it.
