Windows 10 Sucks Eggs

Unread postby Ericmopar » Fri Aug 05, 2016 6:18 am

I haven't had Win 10 for very long and already it reset my preferred Nvidia driver.
I've lost all my settings for Train Simulator 2016.
It still shows my preferred driver in Programs and Features, but the new driver shows up when you open Nvidia Control panel and click on Help/system information. The version numbers don't match.
I was on 353.62 now I'm forced to 358.910. It still shows 353.xxx in the Programs and Features window...
All the cached shaders seem to be gone again...
They forced Cortana on, now you have to do a registry hack to get rid of it and the memory resources it takes up. *!rolleyes!*
They also messed with my stable RealTek HD Audio Driver too. *!mad!*
They re-enabled a lot of the tracking stuff...

I wonder what else they did.

I'm in fits, because they aren't going to support Win 7 much longer, so what to do. *!twisted!*

I forgot to mention my recent firewall discovery. Windows10 just lets pretty much everything through.
Win 10 has got to be the worst security leak I've ever seen.

Security support will continue until January of 2020 on win7 so it's not soon us die hard win7 users have to panic. I have stated before that at my work we have forty or so machines running on win7 and with all our proprietary software are in no hurry to try to get win10 running on all of them.

I spent hours locking down Windows 10. Turning off tracking and defeating it's using my computer as an update server for the internet, yes it does by default. Happy with it now. I suggest you get a real AV and dump the default firewall. It looks more like Windows 7 now. Use your GPU, manufactures website to down load your GPU drivers. I have been using Steam's driver update tool and it does a good job of finding the best drivers. It takes a while to do the fine adjustments but in the end You will be happy with the improved loading times. I noticed how fast it resumes from sleep.

That's the whole point of my original post.
I had it optimized with the proper drivers and MicroSoft placed their own stuff in there. They did it behind my back, which is what I'd been reading on the Internet for months.
If you look in Programs and Features, it will say your installed drivers are still there, but if you look in other places like the Device Manager or Nvidia Control Panel, you will eventually see the changes happen. IE driver numbers and versions that don't match what is supposed to be installed.
A person can try and optimize it all they want, but eventually MS will change it. Sooner rather than later.
I do have a great aftermarket AV. However since the Windows 10 update, my kaspersky can't use it's own firewall.

The anniversary edition is the guilty party that made me not trust Win 10.

Certain versions of W10 have an option. In settings>update settings> advanced options>tick defer future updates this should put you on hold for a while.

The anniversary edition is the guilty party that made me not trust Win 10.

It's been about a year until the anniversary update has appeared. I have not had any issues during all these months in any of the four computers I upgraded.
And with my past experience with XP, W7 and W8.1, the best and more stable O.S. has been W10. And with TS I have no had any issue that can be cause of W10.

But there are are flavours and tastes as in anything else in life.
Intel i7-7900K (3.60 GHz) - ASUS Prime Z390A - 32 GB DDR4 RAM 2400 MHz
GPU EVGA GTX-1060 OC 6GB at 1920x1080, 144 Hz - Monitor ASUS VG-248QE
System Windows 11 Pro in WD SSD 500 GB. Games in Inland 1Tb M.2 NVMe PCIe

The NVIDIA driver that I have is 368.81 and appears the same in both locations and device manager although in a slightly different format.

I have mine locked down and love it.
It cold boots in 20 seconds from BIOS to desktop, barring the time to type in my PIN.

I agree, when it's running right it's not bad.
When you say "locked down" are you even getting security updates?

I've disabled Cortana through the registry, which leaves the search box intact, but it's maddening that I'll have to redo all that crap when the next update comes.
I had my start menu the way I like it and they undid that and reinstalled things.

What happens when they force a video driver update that causes something like the corrupted 2D map?
What happens when they get a bug up their butt to suddenly change your drivers for your loved SSDs and your speed suddenly drops in half.
It'll happen one day too, because not all systems work best with the same drivers.
That's only the tip of the iceberg of problems when an outside source starts dinking with your drivers.

That's because it's newer than the one Microsoft is currently distributing. If you get unlucky, they might revert it. LOL It's happened to some persons.

I had that driver on here a few days ago, but it was slow in the CP and would crash on me sometimes, so I changed back to the 353 series and was happy.

Sooner or later MS dinking with drivers will break my Click Bios etc.

The inability to limit some automatic features is why I decided not to take the free upgrade offer. If I need W10 down the road for DX12 or something I'll just have to buy it but I want to have more control over my pc than Microsoft does.
