Out Of Video Memory Message

Unread postby FHRob » Thu Oct 29, 2015 2:01 pm

I'm trying to run a workshop scenario, "Horseshoe Curve Johnstown to AR Tower" which has several trains running side by side.

I keep getting an "out of video memory" message.

My specs are:

Win 7 64 Bit

Core i3 3240

8 GB Ram

Nvidia GTX 750ti with 2 GB GDDR5

I'm running TS2016 at 1920 x 1080. The graphics settings in TS are very moderate.

That's quite an unusual error when you are running a 64-bit OS! Its usually associated with 32-bit Windows and large VRAM on the card.
Have you run DXDIAG?
In Device manager does your video card show up?
Have you disabled the on board graphics in the bios?
Might be worth reseating the card on the mobo?
Is the video card getting hot?
What driver are you using?
You haven't previously ran a command line option using "bcdedit"?

Hi Peter:

I was thinking about sending you a PM on this, so thanks for answering.

Everything checks out, DXDIAG etc. The video card is registering 32c at this moment, according to EVGA PrecisionX 16. I can run TS2016, and see what temperature registers. BTW, this is the standard clocked edition of the 750ti.

Here's my command line options: -SkipIntros -Multicore -FPSLimit=30 -UseFastBlueprintCache -ShowControlStateDialog EnableAsyncKeys

I forgot to mention the error registered after trying to access the scenario editor, which has been causing problems lately.

I ran the scenario today, and it worked fine. I didn't access scenario editor though.

This scenario has at some points four trains running next to each other, which I thought was impossible in TS. !!*ok*!!

Rob
Glad to hear its now running.
OK I think (just a theory) that it is a "Virtual Address Space" Issue (VAS - a 32-bit app like TS gets a maximum of 4GB in a 64-bit OS) the scenario editor fragments and decreases contiguous space in the VAS so much so the cpu/RAM can no longer deliver data to the video card and you may get this error. It is much more prevalent in a 32-bit OS as the VRAM takes up space in the VAS (it shouldn't in a 64-bit OS - but the editor is pretty draining on resources.)
BTE I ran that scenario and with very high TS (3x3 SSAA) graphics settings and I was using 2.6GB VRAM, so it could also be a VRAM issue ie VRAM not being available after running the scenario editor.
There's probably no "fix" until TS goes 64-bit.

Peter:

I hope the next version of TS has the improvements you suggest.

BTW, I checked the video card temperature after running said scenario, and it registered 48c. Is that OK?

The only video memory issues I've ever had are games that don't recognize on-card video memory over 2GB. My GTX 850M has 4GB VRAM and Bioshock 2 needs a .ini file tweak to recognize all the memory or it eventually crashes at some point in time while playing due to running out of memory in the texture buffer.

Grand Theft Auto 4 wouldn't recognize over 2GB either without a tweak....although it's problem wasn't about crashing, but simply not being able to select higher resolutions and textures in the game. To this day, I don't think either dev has patched these issues. If some wonk on the net can figure out a fix, why can't the original devs? !*not-ok*!
