Got Some New Hardware

Unread postby McTrainGuy » Fri Jan 02, 2015 6:00 am

Morning Everyone, I bought some new hardware for my desktop "ole reliable". The highlight is the graphics card I got which was a Evga Geforce Gt 640 4gb ddr3. I was reading on the forums and now im worried. The card has a bandwidth of i belive 28.8 gb per second. Doesnt Ts2015 require up to 60? I'm pretty much asking if i should return it and pick up the gt 740 which has a bandwidth of about 80 and i think and its ddr5. To make things more confusing, My replacement power supply is 480 watts but the problem is that the gt 740 needs 20 amps on the 12 volt rail and this power suppy has only 16. What should i do? !*hp*! Should i stick with the gt640 or return everything and start over with a psu and the gt 740? Thanks Everyone and Happy New Year!

If you want better graphics. Get the bigger PSU and better video board. We all had to do that to be satisfied.

Also a 40 is a low end business model not really meant for gaming. Yo want a 60 or an 80. The first number in 640, the 6, denotes the generation. 40 is business, 60 is gaming, and 80 is I REALLY like gaming.

McTrainGuy
A better option might be the GTX750TI (Maxwell) this does NOT need a separate power input getting all of its power from the mobo and giving good performance in TS2015.
You are correct optimally TS2015 needs a memory bandwidth of 60Gb/sec and I can tell you even with a bandwidth approaching 200GB/sec TS2015 can still affect performance f all the sliders are to the right! :D

I second what the others are saying.
In general you want something that starts with "GTX" from Nvidia.
The GT series are fine for photo editing and getting nice graphics when streaming movies etc on your PC, but are weak in the gaming dept.
I don't know what your computer specs are, but usually a 550 watt supply will be fine with those lower power cards.
When it comes to power supplies, more is better. Power supplies don't like being stretched to the limit.

I did a little research and was surprised.
A GTX 550ti draws more power, about 115watts but still performs better than a GTX 750ti, especially in the AA dept.

I think someone here posted a link to this site, GPU Boss. You can do a quick simple compare of video cards.

Yes... GTX are the letters you want to look for. My GTX 850M is currently Nvidia's base gaming GPU for laptops. The 840M (there's no GT or GTX in the name) is a dramatic drop in performance from mine. If you don't mind a higher power consumption, older architecture and in some cases less features.... an older generation card should do fine in most cases at a cheaper price. At this point I personally wouldn't settle for anything less than a 7th generation card... but get an 8th gen if you are willing to spend a bit more. It's your budget. Get an older gen card if you wish and/or can't afford better.... but get a GTX whatever gen it is.

I trip out on the naming of GPU cards. AMD has currently a Rx (R6, R7, R8, etc) scheme. I think a GPU card should reflect the year of release in it's name like Railworks does and Windows used to. Makes things a lot easier. Then you can give it other letters and numbers to reflect architecture and capabilities. AMD and Nvidia jump all over the place every couple years in model naming and it's stupid IMO. !!bang!!

I have a GTX650ti running on a 475 watt psu and it's working just fine.
