Not sure how many of you like flight sims, but the Steam version of FSX is currently $5.

I just got it myself, for this price is hard to beat.

I remember MSFS from long ago. Even had it in monochrome on floppy disks.

How does DTG's reincarnation compare against newer and better, even free and open source, flight simulators?

Here is another tip: Euro Truck Simulator 2 at 85% off. This is a very good simulator, very realistic driving.

Yeah I owned the original 1981 Sublogic version on the Apple II. I was in 6th grade. When I think of this sim, Meigs Field (RIP) and the Sears tower (now Willis Tower) on a green monochrome screen are etched in my brain.

Some of the 3rd party stuff now is amazing and expensive at times. The stuff I saw from FSDreamTeam is great.

The last time I owned and played this sim was all the way back to Microsoft Flight Simulator 3.0 from 1989. I just drifted away from the series. I picked this up and I'm glad to be re-introduced.

Here is a VERY RARE 2010 interview of Bruce Artwick...... the original founder/developer/programer of Flight Simulator and the godfather of the modern consumer flight simulator! **!!bow!!**

I saw that and picked it up immediately. I already have FSX on DVD, picked it up with a Best Buy gift card I got several Christmases ago. Flew from Manchester NH airport (KMHT) to Brunswick ME Naval Air Station strip (BNAS) on my first flight. I get 40-50 FPS on my laptop, so that's pretty good. Glad to see it on Steam. !!*ok*!!
Cheers, !*cheers*!

For anyone interested, here is DTG change log from Gold to Steam Edition:
General

* FSX: Steam Edition is now built using the VS2013 compiler for better optimisation and performance. (Still makes use of VS2005 libraries for backwards compatibility.)
* Updated splash, launcher and mission preview images for FSX:SE versions.

Multiplayer, networking and communications
* Gamespy networking now replaced by new Steam networking.
* Game chat now integrated with Steam chat
* Friends/Banned lists now integrated with Steam.
* Game invites now use Steam.
* Host networking defaults to a single port 6112.
* Host networking uses 27016 for Steam Master Server Browser.
* Host timeout (loss of connection to host) now 35 seconds by default (was 55).
* "Disconnected" message dialog now retained on screen for 4 mins before automatic dismissal (was 30 secs).

Steam Support
* Top Down Camera (camera view select 4) was previously bound to F12 by default which is normally used for Steam's screenshot feature. Camera View Select 4 now uses Shift+F12 by default to avoid potential clash.

Compatibility with FSX boxed
* FSX and FSX: Steam Edition co-Existence feature allows both versions to be installed on the same machine.

Default System-Setting Alterations
* Increased TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD to 4096 up from 1024
* Changed HIGHMEMFIX=1
* Increased Vertex and Index Buffers and the number of buffers.

Bugs Fixed
* Fix to particle emitter controllers which were not being updated properly.
* Fix to flush all levels of detail in terrain cache.
* Fix to Texture Composition preventing fail and crash.
* Fixed issue where player is able to reserve more slots for friends than maximum players allowed in the game.
* Fixed issue where invalid Briefing Room was presented to player when cancelling session creation.
* Fixed issue where weather text in the multiplayer briefing room is partially cut off.
* Fixed issue where no error message appears when attempting to host a session with the network adapter disabled.
* Fixed issue where there is no error message when attempting to host a session with the network cable unplugged.
* Fixed issue where host player is frozen after a collision occurs in multiplayer.
* Fixed issue where client gets dropped from a multiplayer game after they crash into the host.
* Fixed issue where the Host Options in multiplayer/ Free Flight allow a user to have a maximum of 99 player slots.
* UIAutomationCore.dll work-a-round is now supplied by default with FSX:SE. This fixes a number of crashes relating to UI interaction on 64-bit versions of Windows.
* Fixed issue where the application’s taskbar preview window displays no content on Windows 8 and above
* Prevent default colour mode for Windows 7 and above (enable automatic display composition).
* sserife.fon file now automatically supplied and loaded.

I have read that FSUIPC does not yet work with FSX Steam so many addons are not working yet.

As a new standalone install, many of the best third party addons will install and work fine in this new edition. Better hurry, though. Sale ends soon.

WOW!! For $5 you can't go wrong. I pulled out my old 'Deluxe Edition' bought on day one to see if the price sticker might still been on it... but no. However, I do remember paying an arm and a leg for it.

Reading these notes, I'll have to pick this up. I haven't been up in the ole' Connie for quite awhile.

I won't get to play it for 2 days at the earliest (when the new laptop arrives).... so I have 2 questions....

#1: What's the highest resolution the sim plays at?

#2: I've read the sim is CPU dependent. What kinda frame rates are you guys getting on today's CPUs?

I have been playing MSFS forever. Flying has always been a favorite of mine. I already had it all including a large PMDG library along with many scenery packages and other addons. I still have not fired up the new Steam edition as there is too much to do with it. Setting up my yoke and pedals and tweaking graphics and cfg files. Once on holiday vacation I will be checking it out to see what a virgin install is like again and will report back.

As someone who primarily uses FSX over any other software and have been for 8 years, as well as talking to people who beta-tested this product, I'll say this:

It's the same thing as original FSX. If you have the boxed version of FSX, don't buy this. In addition to absolutely no changes in the code or product, many addons are not supported, including the gateway to addon products, FSUIPC. Existing multiplayer servers run through the "direct connect LAN" option are not accessible from this "new" product.

If you never had FSX, that's another story. The boxed version is becoming rare, selling for hundreds of dollars on Ebay. The Steam version is now the only one you can practically get.

It runs quite smooth for me even with new carenado planes. Also when switching between views the cockpit or plane doesn't turn grey for a while which is nice. I've had the boxed version for years but when trying to install it it would give me an error that I couldn't fix. So 5 bucks for a worrking, supported copy of FSX is pretty good.

Gaaaaaah! It's already back up to 13$!
Oh well. I didn't really have time for another new game anyway.
I'll wait until the next sale.

If you're into first-person games but like a little humor and different gameplay, try "The Ship" at 5$.

Really the best game based on the Half-Life 2 engine I've seen after Portal 1 & 2.

For some reason I can't see any multiplayer server active right now, I was told there are usually a few.

I think I'll just keep my DVD version, but did they make it easier to run DX 10 orDX11 on the DTG version?
