Hello all, has anyone had experience with operating train simulator on a Mac? I don't think there are any versions of TS made for the Mac, so I believe windows is required...is there anyway one can run ts with Mac OS at all?
Thanks in advance!

TS as in Microsoft Train Simulator? There are ported versions, using Wineskin. They don't work very well.
Railworks hasn't been ported. It uses Microsoft DX technology and I don't think a complex game like Railworks can be ported easily.
The only native train simulator available for Mac is Trainz. Check out

Depending on the Mac in question, you can use Bootcamp to install Windows on a seperate partition of your hard drive. It's a full installation of Windows, using an official driver package provided by Apple. I did this on my Macbook Pro and it works like a dream. It's 99% the same thing as having a true Mac and PC in one system. However it's not something to be undertaken by a computer novice.

I run TS / Railworks on both of my current Macs using Bootcamp as mentioned. One is a mid-2011 iMac 27" and the other is a mid-2012 Retina MacBook Pro 15". Both run fine assuming you don't mind the hassle of having to install and maintain the windows partition on the side. The virtualization packages (Parallels, VMWare, etc) are great for running work apps and turn based strategy games, but not sufficiently fast enough for anything that you want to run real-time.
Believe Dovetail have MENTIONED a possible native Mac port in the past, but the last time i saw them publicly answer a request for this they said they had nothing in-progress currently....

The biggest obstacle is DX and other Microsoft specific architecture like DotNet.
Most multi-platform games use OpenGL.
If the Open Rails team were to choose again, they'd too abandon DX technology, even Run 8 would want to.
Perhaps the promised Unreal game and graphics architecture will make Railworks 2016/7 available for Macs?

Indeed. Plenty of Unreal-based games exist on multiple platforms.
