RAM behavior

OK all you uber geeks here's a question for you. I noticed last night with my performance monitor that my RAM was running at 54% even though there were no programs other than the background stuff running. I looked in processes and only one seemed to have any activity. 8gig of RAM by the way. I rebooted the computer and now it's down to 26% when resting. What's going on? I had a couple of crashes of the game on a new route that's a wip and at first I thought it was the route but now I am beginning to suspect RAM overload. Thoughts anyone?

Ram overload? No such thing. If you go over your ram will slow you down even more. I think it depends on your video card or somewhere in your pc could have some corrupted or last but not least. To much DLC in your railworks. Those are my guesses.

You could try using the Windows Task Manager to look at the RAM usage per process - after starting it, click on View, then Select Columns and choose "Memory - Peak Working Set" (I think it's that one) and look at the ones with the highest value - see if there's something unusual using a lot of memory.

Instead of rebooting, shut down and wait a 1/2 minute before starting up again.

Most likely an antivirus or malware scan running. It also could be Windows indexing service if the HD is being thrashed. I would turn off my WiFi (or unplug the ethernet cable) and let it run overnight. If its still running in the AM then there is a bigger issue that needs attention.

It could be a minor bug in your computer that would be fixed with a good "hard" reset, this usually fixes most unusual bugs in the programming that show up for no reason at all. Shut down your PC normally then once shut down unplug it so that it can drain power completely...usually 15-20 minutes works good. Plug it back in and start it up, if it was just a small bug it would have fixed itself and if not then its something else that im not sure of.

What you see may be entirely "normal" as windows 7 treats unused RAM as wasted RAM. With no programs running I use 2.4GB RAM from 8GB installed and that is "normal".

BUT!! I noticed you say that you had a crash - did the unusual amount of RAM usage follow that crash? Normally when you close a program (like TS2014) it releases the physical RAM it has used for the working set. When a program "crashes" it may NOT release RAM used in the working set (temporarily) and you see high RAM usage. Rebooting just resets everything back to "normal" and clears the RAM buffers.

You did not get a BSOD so I would not worry too much - if you had started another program it may well have got Windows to flush the RAM anyway. Windows is pretty good at RAM management and will usually allocate/deallocate it appropriately to the correct programs.
