Acer install

Without going into the whole shaggy dog story of how I ended up with this thing, I got a Acer ATC-605-UB11. I have a old GT520 that I thought would make the graphis work a bit better than the onboard vieo card. Problem is when I put the GT520 in I don't have any video. The fan is turning so I assume it's in there correctly (done it a bunch of times) but the onboard plug doesn't work nor either of the outlets on the GT520. This machine has 8.1 on it by the way.

This computer is a hell of a surfing machine btw. Windows 8.1 is nice except for trying to find my way around is pretty stupid. No telling why these geniuses decided to make stuff hard to find.

This might be a silly question, but have you looked in the Device Manager (wherever that is in 8.1) to see if it recognises the card?

Mike,
You didn't read my post close enough or heaven for bid I wasn't clear. When I put the card in I have no video on any of the now three monitor plugs so I can't see what it knows.

And yeah there is still a device manager after getting by the challenge of finding it.

You probably need to clear the CMOS. Look in the motherboard manual, or look it up online at Acer's site, to find the "Clear CMOS" jumper. Once you do that, with video connected to the card, you'll want to go into BIOS and reset date/ time, maybe some other "stuff".

Ah, I see! (I thought you meant no video from the new video card).

Have you checked in the BIOS that there is NO clash between the on-board graphics and the graphics card?
Wipe the contacts of the card and reseat?
Does the card need a separate power connector(s) (on the card and sometimes on the mobo) for it to work and is the psu OK to do that?
Regards

So you cannot see the BIOS to make any changes.
OK remove the card now can you get into the BIOS and/or start windows - if yes the card would appear to be faulty or the psu cannot handle it - unlikely???
Try the card in another PC - possible? or a different slot on the mobo??
Any beeps when you start the PC
How is the monitor connected to the PC (DVI,etc) via the mobo or via the GT520 - that could make a difference - if its connected to the mobo and the onboard card is disabled it may not boot.
These are just suggestions but it sounds like a video card hardware issue??

Buzz, can you go back to the onboard video output first, so you can look at the BIOS?
Onboard Graphics might be selected as the only option right now. It should be set to Auto.

Second, do you have the driver disc for that card? Can you use the onboard Graphics to get the card's driver on there, either with a disc or getting online?

Nvidia cards don't always work off the basic windows drivers. I found that out with my GTX 780. I had to install the drivers for that card first, otherwise I got exactly what you are describing.
