Have you tried pulling the power leads from the PS to the motherboard and re-inserting? I had a very similar issue where the PC would freeze coming out of power save and I had to do that to get it to boot up again. Finally, after months of doing so, I eventually replaced the power supply and all was well again.

Yeah... actually... I jumped to the conclusion the power switch is bad.
Any number of loose or dirty connections could cause intermittent issues.
I'm assuming Bob did the wiggle test.
