"what" is saying you don't need MSE? I run both with no issues. Virus' can and do block the installation of anti spyware, and anti virus programs.

Download REVO Uninstaller and get rid of Chrome. One PC at a time so you can still get on the Internet and report back to us.

That makes no sense but if that's what MS says, guess you're stuck for now. You can always try "Avast!" it's free and works good. There's also "Anti Vir" which is free. But lets get rid of Chrome and that virus.

If you still get no result with REVO, then "kill" Chrome in Task Manager. CTRL-ALT-DEL, click on Task Manager, Processes tab, look for and "stop" the .exe for Chrome. Now uninstall it.

You may want to have Internet Explorer or Firefox installed and ready so when Chrome's gone you can still connect to the net. I'll check back. !*salute*!

It depends on what version of Windows a person has. MSE on Vista and 7 and I believe on 8 it's back to Windows Defender.
Also, If you install MSE it actually works in conjunction with Windows Defender files, even though it says it shuts it off.
I hate to admit this because I use MSE as well, but it really seems ineffective against these newer malware/adware stuff. I tried several anti viral software packages on my Mom's PC and Kaspersky is the only paid one the finds all this stuff.
One thing I've noticed is this. The more ads a person blocks, the less malware attacks get through. Some of the IT guys at a biking site I use, had said for years, that most malware gets through in the ads. They mostly work in Silicon Valley BTW.

There are also tons of malware sites offering free downloads of Java, IE, Firefox etc. I try to go to to the proper website for a download.
Java, Oracle.com
Flash, Adobe.com
Firefox, Mozilla.org

Presuming the virus or adware was in Chrome, it should be gone. If you have CCleaner, run it's normal cleaner function and then run the Registry tool. Make a backup when it asks you to. Then have it fix all the problems.

I run Firefox with two plugins. One is Ad Block Plus, as Antwerp suggests, then I also have Ghostery, which blocks trackers. Then with Defender and MSE, I'm hoping that I'm pretty well protected. (knock on wood) !!*ok*!!

Which means IE is infected, and you can't uninstall it either. What anti virus are you running now? Wonder if that will remove it. And is IE updated to the latest?

Should he just do a System Restore at this point?

What Operating System do you own. (Win 7, Win 8, Win XP, etc.)

Would have to be a Restore back before the virus was encountered, if he even know when that was. And there is no guarantee that a Restore will get rid of the virus.

NS, do you get automatic updates from Windows? That usually keeps IE and Defender up to date. If you don't have automatic updates set up, you should do so.

Yeah, Some Viruses sit dormant in computers for days if not weeks before attacking.

Generally a system restore works but some viruses put up a decent fight.
