I have no idea whether it is taboo to talk about other train sims on this site, but I just tried Open Rails 0.7 which has just been released.
Wow, those guys are making real progress and doing an amazing job.
The physics in that sim are amazing:
- Slack in the train just works properly.
- Brakes work properly and apply and release realistically.
- The brake pipe recharges realistically.
- You can bail off the loco brakes with the train brakes applied and watch the slack slowly stretch out.
- When you couple to a cut of cars you have to manually connect the brake hose, it doesn't just automatically release the brakes on the cars like MSTS and TS2012 both do.
- They also have new wheelslip modeling. It is quite a challenge to get a heavy train moving up a grade.
The physics in this game is light years ahead of MSTS or TS2012. The AI, signalling and dispatcher logic is still very flakey though. Hopefully that will all be addressed in the not too distant future.
Oh, and all at 200+ frames per second
Overall, they are still behind MSTS and TS2012 in terms of having a polished product, but they are the only group moving in the right direction IMHO.
In terms of graphics, I would rate TS2012 the best, followed by openrails, followed by MSTS. The only exception to this is that openrails is the only sim so far to have realistic US headlights. They are extremely bright and light up the terrain for at least half a mile ahead of the train. Apart from the better headlights, openrails looks as good or better than MSTS but at 5x the frame rate.
In terms of content, MSTS is the winner, followed by openrails which can use the MSTS routes and rolling stock, but the activities are not quite right yet, and of course TS2012 is lacking in north american content.
In terms of my personal favourite area, simulation and physics, openrails is the undisputed king by a long way, followed by MSTS, with TS2012 lagging far behind.
Has anyone else tried this yet?
