Microsoft "forcing" windows 10?

Postby thecanadianrail » Sun Aug 23, 2015 10:54 am

So I just had an update to my computer last night while I was sleeping.... It was an upgrade for Windows 7 which is what I have. The update pretty much made my pc look like it's running Windows 95 (aka no background, very pixilated menu etc...) but it still says it's running 7 but it's suggesting to do the upgrade to 10? Anyone else have this problem? Oh and it deleted all my programs and games off the hard drive too...

You are running a legitimate Windows 7? There is no message in the bottom right of the desktop saying you need to activate?

Perhaps the video driver got disabled?
The official update to Windows 10 moves a lot of old and obsolete (MS consideration, unfortunately) to a Windows.old folder under your system (C:) drive.
It that folder is present and contains dirs and files, perhaps the update to W10 has already started and still needs to complete fully?

No, there is something else wrong there unrelated to the Win 10 reminders. It seems like maybe Win 7 pushed out a video driver update that your PC didn't like. Try a reboot, and if that doesn't work see if you can revert.

Just as an aside, Win 10 doesn't install automatically. You have to say 'yes' about three times in the process - once to request it, again to commence the download, and again to permit the install. For me it went smooth - no hickups, all software working properly. They did a really good job of this release.

So I've tried restarting the computer with no luck. I've looked around and there is nothing saying that my video driver or card is not working. I've decided to go ahead with the windows 10 upgrade..... I wanted to get it eventually but at a time that was convenient to me and not right now.

i understand. MS forcing its W10 onto unsuspecting users is a bit harsh sometimes.

Best leave it alone doing its thing, a couple reboots, etc. and check once it is finished. latest AMD and nVidia drives should be installed automatically, but may not work right out of the box for older and non-mainstream laptops.

In no way does MS ever force anyone to upgrade to Windows 10.

Yes you are correct. I have been running W10 since 30 July, have had no problems with it, other than user generated. !!*ok*!! I did my upgrade by downloading to a USB memory stick, then installed from that. Good way to do it if you have more than one computer.

Exactly. Nor does the update just start up by surprise in the middle of the night while the computer is off. However, once the update completed, I did have to manually download a WIN10 driver for my nVidia graphics card. Everything else is running without problems, except for the fact that I accidentally deleted the Store application and haven't found a way to get it back -- not a great loss, anyway.

Time to stamp out these panicky rumors . . . or should we just wait until mid-September when chicken littles start having nightmares about TS2016?

From reading forums that contain posts of speculation or uninformed opinions and they believe them to be fact. And to top that off I was just reading something on a site called the motherboard where scientists are studying to try to figure out if we live in a hologram.

I heard something like that a few weeks ago that we are all living in one big computer game and are being controlled by aliens. !*YAAA*!

If we are controlled by aliens I've got a couple complaints to them about how I've been designed. !*roll-laugh*!
