no worries, I readz lotz on the interwebz. No one ever lies here! !*roll-laugh*!

Actually though, I've been to a lot of sites and read a lot of background on OCing - however, I'm already established as a post-it @ RWA, hence the Q's here) I also work with a few gurus who know more than me ...

current thought from everyone is: I should be able to get the RAM to run @ 1600 mHz by adjusting the frequency in BIOS, and adjusting the memory clock multiplier on the cpu to 8.0

should't cause any issues. shouldn't need to up the RAM voltage any. Of course, if doing that causes icky BSODs, well, then I'll just set it back to [auto]

the other point of view is, am I really going to notice the extra 266mHz RAM speed? !*don-know!*

(at work today, so experiments begin tomorrow sometime)

While I'm on my little soap box, the main reason I've never OC'd my system is I don't want the hassle of constantly tracking down irregularites (I just want things nice and stable) not because I lack know-how (I just lack the experience). In this case, I don't look at it as OCing, it's more like tweaking to get the advertised performance. *!!wink!!*

I've been building systems for about 15 years and messing around the innards of PCs long before that (10 more years). That said, I am fairly cautious in my approach and like to have an idea exactly how playing with a setting should affect outcomes before trying it.

On a whole new area of fun: tomorrow I'm going to try out using Windows System Preparation Tool to make the big move to the new PC. (Speaking of things I've never tried before) If it works as I'm told it will be painless and awesome.

Stay tuned!

266Mhz in RAM speed? I doubt you will notice a difference. But when I went from 800Mhz to 1866Mhz, wow. But like I said, if you can figure out what settings to change in the BIOS for the RAM, go for it. The Gigabyte board I have has two BIOS chips, so if I totally screw up
Ryzen 7 2700K, Asus Prime X570P, 32Gb DDR4, 2x 1Tb M.2 SSD's, RTX2060 6Gb, Occulus Rift
Win 10 Pro 64bit, keyboard/ mouse/ wheel/ pedals/ baseball bat

As long as only 1 BIOS chip starts smoking and sparking I'm all good then! !*roll-laugh*!

And ya, I'm thinking the boost from 800 -> 1333 will be just fine if I can't get the 1600 question licked tomorrow.

to be continued ...

!*YAAA*! !*YAAA*!

All finished! Quite an upgrade over my previous system. Still playing around with the settings in RW3 but seeing improvements in frames & graphics all around.

Windows System Preparation Tool is awesome, easiest transfer of settings EVER !!*ok*!!

Upped the memory clock to 8x and RAM is running @ 1600mHz, everything appears stable.

Now off for some sleep!

Hey barnez, glad to see things going smoothly.
It would be a good idea to run a stress program like Prime 95 or Orthos to make sure your settings are truely stable.

I may run Prime 95, I'm not sure what benefit Orthos will have (designed for dual core) but I'm not too worried - I don't really think of tweaking the BIOS to get RAM to run at its advertised speed as overclocking.

So far everything is happy, cpu is running at normal temps.

On another happy note, I have no idea how (given my understanding of how the licensing for Win7 works) but I was able to re-validate my Win7 (oem) online. *!greengrin!*

I'm chalking that up as a double benefit of using the System Prep Tool.

Only thing left to do now is install (ok connect - it's sitting in the caddy & powered and I'm running AHCI) the backup HDD.
