Upgrades worth it?

Unread postby Shortliner » Tue Nov 29, 2011 9:48 am

So I can't really decide whether or not it's worth upgrading my current machine for RW3, so hopefully y'all can tell me or not.

Specs:
Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 955 3.2GHz (64 Bit)
RAM: 4GB DDR3 1333MHz
HD: 1TB SATA II
Graphic Card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 520 (1 GB) << Now this one I do have plans to upgrade at some point
Power Supply: 480W

So far I have plans to upgrade the Graphic Card and Power supply, but I'm wondering if it's really worth it to spend the money. Right now RW3 is giving me 14fps on routes that are optimize for RW3.

I'd say for now that's a pretty nice rig, altho you are right, the video card needs upgrading. I wouldn't hope for much of an improvement with RW tho. My thinking lately is not to upgrade for RW, just upgrade in general because it's time, which is what I'm doing. Been 3 years since I built my PC, added a video card last year, but it's time to go with DDR3 RAM and USB 3.0, all that cool new stuff, including a new Phenom II 970 Black Edition. I doubt RW will run any better, but it could. Your single hard drive will cause stuttering when RW loads the next tiles as a route plays out, but that's normal. I minimized that with a RAID 0 setup.

I hope that RSC is at least working on the code so that it'll stop being so horrible on even the high end systems. This is the first time I've been disappointed with RSC.

I just wish any of us really had a clue what is going on with 2012. I have rolling stock I can load onto routes that have not been updated and cannot to updated routes. TSX works fine on some routes, others bog to near zero frame rates and get all jerky and this forum which has some really bright people has about as many fixes and results as our economists and boy it's just frustrating.

Rant off.

Every since I got involved with RW I have listened to people talk about mystery problems that I was not having wondering why they were having such when my system was so stable. Now I am them. UUURGH!!!!!!!!

Not an expert, but considering that TSX (henceforth "Shiny Mode") pushes dynamic shadows and lighting to their extreme, it's what I would consider the main problem as those funtions tend to put the most strain on the GPU. It's why Crysis broke so many PCs when it first came out. My guess is RSC forgot to properly beta test it, and now we have to figure it out for them. Even on my box (as horribly underpowered as it is) it runs smoothly, even on in-game max settings, if I turn the shadows way down or off. Despite its age (about 6 years tech-wise for the board, 2 years for the graphics card) RW is the only game that actually bogs down. Also, proper AA settings want, not just a slider.

Shiny Mode is basically a public beta disguised as an upgrade IMHO. It's pretty, but tends to break a few things.

So very pretty.....
