64 bit windows 7

Unread postby dcushing » Mon Oct 03, 2011 8:08 pm

Are there any problems installing Railworks/Rail Simulator 2012 on a Windows 7 64 bit system. Am currently upgrading my computer and have the option to go either way.

What styckx said.

There is no reason to stay with a 32bit OS.

I strongly agree with this statement.

I want to thank all of you for the quick answers. It looks like I have 64 bits in my future.

With 64 bit you can also run a nice 8Gb of RAM, which will make RW run even better! 32 bit can only use 3.2Gb. No reason not to go 64 bit Win 7.

Chris, just curious... what is the most amount of memory you've seen RW/TS use? I think the largest I ever saw was 1.6 GB but then I think my low usage observations might be because I never drive, just edit. I have a feeling driving several Standard scenarios in a single session might gobble up the most RAM????

Right now, between Win 7, Firefox (10 tabs open) and Folding @ Home, I'm using 1.8Gb out of 4. I've never really checked to see what RW uses. I'll check next time I fire it up. My next upgrade is going to be 2x4Gb sticks of G Skill 1024 DDR2. I think the 800Mhz RAM I have now is probably the bottleneck. CPU and video card are fine.

Speaking of RAM, Corsair just released 8GB sticks, so now more than 16GB is possible in the majority of systems.

Not that 99% of people ever need 16GB, let alone more than 16GB, but still.

I would drop that down to 75%, RAM is highly valued when running virtual machines which is happening more and more often this days.

Most older boards max out at 4Gb, newer boards like mine (2 years old) max out at 8Gb. Only high end newer boards can use 16Gb. And they are mostly DDR3.
