TS2019 & 4K/UHD (3840 x 2160)

Unread postby NorthernWarrior » Wed Dec 12, 2018 3:15 am

After upgrading my graphics card and buying a new 4K monitor cannot get TS2019 to run. Set the screen resolution in TS 64 bit to 3840 x 2160 and was prompted to restart. Did this and game attempted to launch as 32 bit, skipping between a faded out splash screen and desktop before popping up a vertex error message. Locked up the PC and desktop as I couldn't select anything in Ctrl-Alt-Del and had to do a hard reboot. I then started Steam and clicked TS 64 bit - same thing happened with the little black box, an attempt to load the splash screen then lock up.

Looks as if TS is broken if trying to run at an ultra high resolution. All the graphic drivers are up to date - having installed with the new video card today. Cannot even get in the game to change resolution back to a lower value. Anyone else encountered this issue?

I realize this isn't too much help, but TS2019 does work at 4K. There isn't a known problem with this.

I'd suggest clearing your Railworks\Content\PlayerProfile.bin and launching via Railworks64.exe just to see if you can get it running again.

If you get it running, clear the cache ( from Main Menu - Settings, Tools, Clear Cache )

The vertex error message sometimes indicates a problem with memory. I am running with 16G, but I don't know what the minimum is for 4K.

Finally I wonder if it might be a bad video card - do other games work OK in 4K?

Nope, tried the first step and both 32 bit and 64 bit exhibited the same behaviour.

The GPU is a Nvidia GTX 1050 with 2Gb VRAM and the system memory is 8Gb so it certainly shouldn't have an issue launching the game. I've got Train Sim World (DTG's other product) running in 4K which if anything is more memory hungry than its predecessor.

Oh well, guess next thing is an uninstall/reinstall see if that helps otherwise no more Railworks on the main PC.

NB: Also a little surprised to see this topic relegated to "Geek Speak" where it is not going to get so many views as in TS2019 main area. This is not a hardware fault (AFAIK) as I have all my other programs up and running on the new equipment and someone else who had this issue might not otherwise see the query...

So post it back over there and see where you get the most responses now that you’ve told us your rig can’t be the problem and the evil Death Star DTG must be the root of the problem. !*roll-laugh*!

Wow, um just wow.

Not quite sure what I said out of order to warrant that diatribe and I think quite frankly you need to go and read the CoC of your own forum, mate.

At no time have I pointed the finger at DTG or their software specifically and I'd like you to quote the source in my comments where I referred to them as some sort of "Evil Death Star". Everything I posted is factual and details the problem and steps taken so far to try and resolve the problem.

Guess the RWA apple is fallen somewhat further from its "helpful and positive" tree on this one.

I've never really investigated the UHD thing. I know JPS on YouTube can run it fine.

Are you running in Borderless or Full Screen?

One sometimes needs to exercise their sense of humor when reading my posts. If you took me literally I apologize. You did say in your initial post "Looks as if TS is broken if trying to run at an ultra high resolution."

Yes new HDMI cable. Not a cheapo Wilko or Tesco one either, upmarket gold plated jobbie! All the other programs I've tried so far including, believe it or not old (boxed) FSX from 2005 which has built in support for 3840 x 2160, are fine.

Anyhow next thing to try is the game file integrity check as I don't really want to go through the pain and bandwidth of removing then installing again all those gigs of data.

Do you have to use nVidia Surround or the equivalent to get that res? I'm not familiar with a single 4k, just trips.

With only 2GB VRAM you may not have enough to process 4K - have you tried lower resolutions.
8GB RAM is minimal for TS2019 64-bit you may need to increase that too or lower the settings.
Display Port if you have it is better than HDMI.

Thanks Buzz. I guess I will have to do the reinstall to get back in and set up the options.

Postscript:
Up and running in both 32bit and 64bit after refreshing the local files and changing the DPI settings on the launcher. So not really sure where the actual problem lay. Have to say though, looks absolutely superb on the large UHD screen, like an all new game. So lots of old routes and motive power to refamiliarize myself with! :)
