Oculus Rift

Unread postby ugadawgs2716 » Sat Jul 02, 2016 4:29 pm

First, let me preface this post by saying I have been somewhat out of the game for a while now. This is a two part issue, the first being that the iMac we had partitioned for this purpose, didn't get split down the middle as we had requested and is out of hard drive room; the second is that in an attempt to still be able to enjoy TS2016, I installed Steam on my old desktop but every time I launch the program, a data error occurs (if I try to look at the error, the whole computer locks up) and I'm forced to end the program through the task manager.
I said all that to ask this, with the release of TS to Xbox One, which I already own, is it worth it to dump the money into an Oculus certified rig? Playing any train simulator with the settings maxed is attractive to be sure, and if there is any planned capability to interface with VR, then that would certainly be worth it. I ask because I know that DTG is working with UE4 for the new gaming engine, and in reading up on Oculus Rift (because I didn't know what it was beforehand), I noticed that UE4 is one of the compatible gaming engines with Oculus Rift, unless I misinterpreted what I read. Does this mean it's automatically compatible with anything that utilizes UE4? Or only that the potential is there, and in that case, have there been any rumors from DTG about whether or not that will be supported? Thanks, Chris.

There are very few rumours about DTG UE4 version of TS. The trouble with rumours is that some people misinterpret a rumour as if it is a given fact, then you get people saying TS UE4 is coming out on a certain date. As far as I know there has been no date released by DTG when UE4 TS is coming out and what it supports except some rumblings about Xbox.

Hi Chris

1. UE4 is one of the compatible gaming engines with Oculus Rift, unless I misinterpreted what I read. You are correct.
2. Does this mean it's automatically compatible with anything that utilizes UE4? Yes and no. Check out Vorpx and Tridef as they "might" come up with a solution for games that is not officially supported by the developer .

So. I have been VR gaming ever since I got my hands on the Oculus Rift DK2. I also bought the Oculus Rift CV1 and The HTC Vive... But I have yet to see any support for VR for any of the known train simulators. !*hp*! Well, on an historical note, DTG actually did support the very first Oculus Rift DK1 but that ended as soon as the DK2 came online. So technically the gaming engine currently in use in today`s TS2016 should work..- its just that DTG has not implemented support for it.

Still waiting on DTG to release any information on their upcoming UE4 version.. When / If DTG announces that they will support VR headsetsfor their new version, then yes invest in a powerful rig. Until then hang on tight..

Final note.. If you want to have an amazing gaming experience right now ( using non train sim games ) then I recommend buying a Rift or Vive. It takes gaming to another level, absolutely fantastic! You need a beefy system. Im running VR games without any issues. My rig info is displayed below this text.

VR support would be awesome, but without knowing more about DTGs plans I wouldn't buy VR specifically for Train Simulator.

If you have the income and are curious for other reasons it IS worthwhile, though. Bought a Vive about a month ago and have REALLY been enjoying it. Minecraft in VR is completely mind-blowing.

If you are considering buying one of the headsets then get demos of both and think hard about how you're going to use it. The common wisdom is that the Rift headset is more comfortable / more refined, but that the Vive room-scale movement and hand-controls put it in a different league.

Has anyone tried an Oculus Rift with DTG's Euro Fishing - that is based on the UE4 engine.
That could give an indication that it might work in TSUe4 when released.

If it's worth anything, the project lead for the Next Gen is a huge VR geek.
